West Georgia Volleyball Overpowered by Bellarmine

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - UWG volleyball continues its search for the first ASUN win of the season after falling 3-0 to Bellarmine on the road.

Opening the Kentucky trip at BU (8-9, 2-3 ASUN) tonight (Oct. 10), the Wolves' (2-16, 0-5 ASUN) offense could not get enough going to overcome the Knights recording a .310 team hitting percentage, while UWG sat with a .147 percentage.

The Wolves were led by outside hitter Valiree Schmus with 10 points, marking the ninth time this season the freshman reached double-digits.

MATCH DETAILS
Picking up from where she left off, Grace-Blythe Cornett got the ball rolling for West Georgia by tallying three of the opening four points for the Pack. Joining in on the attack, Rylee Henderson added to the UWG total with a pair of kills, bringing the score to a 6-6 stalemate. With the two teams trading points, the match was knotted up four more times before the Knights' lead exploded to 20-13 after multiple UWG errors followed a handful of Bellarmine kills. Out of the Wolves' second timeout, a bad set by BU and a Molly Brunell kill cut the hosts' advantage down to five, but the Knights answered three kills and tallied a point from an error. Down 24-15, UWG went on a 4-0 run which featured a pair of Brunell kills, a Cornett ace and a kill by Sanai Young, but BU tallied one more point from a kill by their scoring leader, outside hitter Natalie Bland, to win 25-19.

Staying hot in the second set, Brunell, Cornett and Young opened things up for the Wolves' offense. Tallying her third and fourth kills of the match, Schmus secured UWG back-to-back points, dashing the Bellarmine lead to 10-7. With the Wolves' offense starting to slow, the Bellarmine advantage began to balloon. Going on a 7-2 run, the hosts held a 19-11 lead before the Pack could find its footing. Hitting at a match-low .29 percentage, combined with a match-high six errors, UWG would fall 25-12.

Kicking off the match finale by jumping out to a 7-4 advantage, the Wolves opened the third set by limiting errors and pushing a match-high .325 hitting percentage. Going on a 7-0 run, the Knights retook a tight 11-7 advantage over UWG. With Schmus leading the way in the third, the Wolves stayed within a four-point deficit until a 5-1 run by the hosts gave BU a 21-14 advantage. Like the opening set, West Georgia would storm back late, even cutting the Knights' lead to 21-18 following four straight points, but it was not enough to overtake. UWG fell 25-20.
