UWG Falls to Eastern Kentucky on the Road

RICHMOND, Ky. - The West Georgia volleyball team closed out its Kentucky trip falling to Eastern Kenkucky, 3-0, today (Oct. 12).

With EKU (12-6, 4-2 ASUN) garnering 19.5 points by one of the ASUN's top scorers, Addison Burke, while they recorded a .383 team hitting percentage, UWG (2-17, 0-6 ASUN) could not keep up with the Colonels.

UWG was led today by outside hitter Valiree Schmus with 6.5 points. Outside hitter Marley Staats recorded a season-high four digs.

MATCH DETAILS
EKU opened today's match in its home arena, Alumni Coliseum, jumping out to a 9-0 advantage, as the Wolves' attacks could not find the floor. With Grace-Blythe Cornett's two points leading the way, UWG responded with a 6-3 run to cut the hosts' lead to 12-6. Over the next few volleys, the two teams went back and forth in scoring, resulting in the Colonel advantage staying within a 6-7 point range. Down 18-12, Alex Strating's four early points pushed the pace for the Pack. The middle blocker secured these scores while attacking at a 1.000 hitting rate. The hosts would hold on to win 25-15 while recording a remarkable .500 team hitting percentage. Despite losing by ten, the Wolves limited their mistakes to four total errors, resulting in a respectable .226 team hitting percentage.

EKU opened the second set with a tight lead, but the Wolves were right on the heels with UWG tallying points from a handful of Colonel errors. With West Georgia trailing 8-5, a ten-point run by the hosts put the Pack out of reach. Tallying late points from Rylee Henderson and a handful of other Wolves, UWG brought the hosts' lead down to 24-14, but it was too little and too late. EKU took the second set 25-14.

With the Pack showing a lot of fight to open the last set, today's finale looked like it was going to be the most competitive out of the three. By the time EKU reached ten points, the set had been tied twice and the Wolves were just behind with nine on the scoreboard. After staying within striking distance to open the set, Eastern Kentucky capitalized on three UWG errors and tallied two points from kills in quick succession, giving the hosts a 16-11 advantage and forcing the Wolves to call a timeout. Out of the break, EKU closed the match out with a 9-4 run to win 25-15.
