Recreation Day Resilience Leads to 2-2 Draw in Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The Wolves returned home for Recreation Day on Sunday afternoon, battling Queens University of Charlotte to a thrilling 2-2 draw at University Soccer Field. Backed by their community and the season's largest crowd since their season opener, UWG put together a hard-fought performance to move to 3-11-1 overall and 1-4-1 in ASUN play.

Queens (3-7-4, 2-3-1 ASUN) struck early, finding the back of the net in the 4th minute off a finish from forward Tamia Ford to take a 1-0 lead. The Wolves responded just eight minutes later when freshman midfielder Rachel Higgins equalized with her second career goal, assisted by Campbell Taylor. The goal marked Higgins' first goal since UWG's 2-0 win over Alabama State on September 7.

The Royals regained the advantage in the closing moments of the first half as senior Mia Banchero scored her first goal of the season in the 43rd minute to put Queens ahead 2-1 heading into halftime.

In the second half, the Wolves came out with renewed energy, feeding off the Recreation Day crowd. The match's momentum shifted in the Wolves' favor in the 74th minute when Queens midfielder Juliana Hunter was shown her second yellow card of the game, leaving the Royals a player down for the remainder of the contest.

Just five minutes later, UWG capitalized. Junior midfielder Noemi Casique found the equalizer in the 79th minute with her third goal of the season, assisted by Aleyshka Orellano. The goal was Casique's first since scoring against Jacksonville State in the home opener.

Queens threatened to score late, but freshman goalkeeper Emily Sanabria saved the match in the 83rd minute, charging out of the box to make a one-on-one save that preserved the draw. Sanabria finished with six saves in 90 minutes of action, which brings her to 88 saves on the season.

By the final whistle, Queens held a 15-10 edge in total shots, while UWG recorded six shots on target compared to the Royals' nine. The 2-2 result marked UWG's first draw of the 2025 season and a strong response after falling 3-0 to the Royals in Charlotte the previous week.

West Georgia will travel to Fort Myers, Florida to face Florida Gulf Coast University  in their next match. Kickoff is set for Thursday, October 16, at 7 p.m.
