Top-25 Matchup on the Road Awaits 16th-Ranked UWG Football

10/2/2025 10:14:00 AM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Another road test awaits the 16th-ranked UWG Wolves football team as they travel north to take on a nationally-ranked Austin Peay team in Clarksville, Tennessee.

It marks the first time UWG has played in a top-25 matchup as a Division I program and both defenses come in ranked in the top-10 in the country in rushing defense and both are top-15 in total defense.

GAME INFORMATION
#16 West Georgia (5-0, 1-0 UAC) at #21/22 Austin Peay (3-2, 1-1 UAC)
Saturday, October 4
Kickoff: 4:00 p.m. EST
Location: Clarksville, TN / Fortera Stadium
TV: ESPN+
Radio: KISS 102.7

"We're getting into the meat of our schedule now and it starts with Austin Peay," said head coach Joel Taylor at his weekly coaches show filmed on Tuesdays at Jefferson's of Carrollton. "Coach Jeff Farris is also in his second year, and he's building his team, and doing a good job. They upset MTSU earlier and faced Georgia and was in the game for a little bit."

The Governors opened their season with a 20-point victory over FBS rival Middle Tennessee State, and then in week two took on a top-five UGA team and trailed just 14-3 at the break before ultimately falling 28-6 in Athens.

Since then, the Govs have dominated Morehead State, fell on the road to a nationally-ranked Abilene Christian team, before dominating Utah Tech at home in United Athletic Conference play a week ago.

"They've got a good football team, and I think it starts with their quarterback. He's a transfer from Mississippi State and does a really nice job and gets it to the right spots when he needs to and can also run the ball," Taylor added.

Chris Parson is 20-for-80 on the season with 1,026 passing yards to go with eight touchdowns and just a single interception. The Brentwood, Tennessee native is also APSU's leading rusher, averaging 42 yards per game on the ground. In his last five games combined, Parson has thrown for 534 yards and five touchdowns while adding 120 yards and three touchdowns on the ground.

APSU's offense comes into week six ranked 19th in the country in total offense giving UWG two high-powered offenses to prepare for in back-to-back road games in UAC play.

The Wolves did a good job containing Southern Utah's top-10 offensive attack last week, and now look to clamp down on the Govs' offense that averages 33.8 points per game.

"Other than three explosive plays in the second half at Southern Utah, I think our defense played pretty well," Taylor said of his defense. "If you add up those three plays it was 122 yards, and we only gave up right at 200 total in the second half."

UWG's defense comes into the contest ranked 10th in the FCS in total defense (278.6 yds./game), 9th in rushing defense (87.8 yds./game), and 9th in scoring defense (16.0 pts./game).

But the UWG offense will face a tough challenge as well as the APSU defense ranks seventh in the country in rushing defense (85.2 yds./game). But the Wolves have a three-headed rushing attack that looks to improve upon their second 200-yard game in the win at SUU.

Latrelle Murrell led the way in that game, and has all season, racking up 501 yards on the ground and is one of 13 players in the FCS averaging over 100 rushing yards per game. Freshman TJ Lester has 282 yards on the ground and leads the team in rushing touchdowns with five, a number that is tops among FCS freshmen. Finally, quarterback Davin Wydner can do it with his legs too as he averages 48 rushing yards per game and had two scores on the ground last week at Southern Utah to eclipse the 10 career rushing touchdown mark.

"Austin Peay is stout on defense and playing well, and we've got our work cut out for us," Taylor remarked, "But I say this every week, I am up for the challenge. It's going to be awesome, our first time being ranked and facing a ranked opponent, and that kind of game just feels different."

West Georgia enters their week six road trip with the fourth-longest active win streak in FCS at six games, and it's the eighth-longest streak in Division I football. The Wolves have won four straight games on the road and that number is the highest-active streak in FCS, tied with Presbyterian and Harvard.

Saturday's contest is just the second all-time meeting between the Wolves and Govs with Austin Peay winning last year's meeting 20-16 in Carrollton.

Kickoff from Fortera Stadium is set for 4 p.m. EST.

The game is being broadcast on ESPN+ and UWG fans can also listen live to the radio broadcast on KISS 102.7 or the Gradick Communications Listening Portal.
