Jacksonville Capitalizes Early to Claim a Victory in Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia (4-13-1, 2-6-1 ASUN) battled hard in their home match on Wednesday night, but fell 2-0 to Jacksonville (9-4-3, 6-1-2 ASUN) at University Soccer Field.

Despite the result, the evening was highlighted by a milestone performance from freshman goalkeeper Emily Sanabria, who recorded her 100th save of the season in the 15th minute of the match, becoming the first UWG freshman since 2018 to reach the mark. Sanabria finished the match with four saves, bringing her season total to 103, which ties her for the third most saves in a single season in program history.

The Dolphins, who have already clinched a berth in the ASUN Tournament, showcased their skilled offense throughout the contest. Jacksonville struck first in the 17th minute when forward Alicia Rey Perez, the ASUN's leading scorer, connected on a pass from Laura Di Mascio to give the visitors a 1-0 advantage.

Despite the early deficit, UWG's back line, anchored by Kaialani Wise and Isa Ramirez, settled in and limited high quality chances for the rest of the first half. Sanabria continued to shine in goal, denying multiple close range shot attempts to keep the match within reach heading into halftime.

Jacksonville doubled their lead early in the second half in the 54th minute, once again behind the duo of Di Mascio and Rey Perez, as Perez converted her second goal of the evening to make the score 2-0. This offensive performance gave Perez 13 goals on the season, while Di Mascio's two assists brought her total to three on the season.

Sanabria added two more saves before being subbed out in the 71st minute. Sophomore goalkeeper Siani Jones entered the match and made an immediate impact, recording two saves of her own to finish out the contest.

While the Wolves generated a limited amount of attacking opportunities, Campbell Taylor and Breanna DeWinter each attempted a shot, with Taylor's shot narrowly missing the right post. Jacksonville finished the match with a 23-2 edge in total shots and a 7-0 advantage in corner kicks, while UWG committed 12 fouls to the Dolphins' five in a physical matchup.

The loss moves UWG to 3-5-1 at home, while Jacksonville improves to 5-3 on the road in a pivotal conference match.

The Wolves will now turn their attention to their final match of the 2025 regular season, returning home for Homecoming on Saturday, October 25, to face North Florida at 12 p.m. at University Soccer Field in Carrollton.
