UWG Swept in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - The West Georgia volleyball team dropped its first away match of the week, 3-0, tonight (Oct. 22) to Queens University. The team heads to Nashville, Tennessee, this weekend to face Lipscomb on Sunday (Oct. 26).

UWG (2-20, 0-9 ASUN) showed great fight in set one but could not get enough going late to overtake Queens (14-8, 5-4 ASUN). The following two sets featured huge scoring runs by the hosts, resulting in the Royals completing a 3-0 sweep.

Right side hitter Grace-Blythe Cornett led the Wolves tonight with seven points and seven kills.

MATCH DETAILS
Today's road match opened with the Wolves jumping out to a 5-2 lead thanks to Queens committing three early attack errors. With middle blocker Sanai Young's three early kills leading the way, UWG stayed out in front until Queens was able to lock the match at 11-11 following a 3-0 run. The Royals took their first lead of the day at 13-12. Middle blocker Alex Strating knotted back up at 13-13 with her third point of the day, but Queens was able to reestablish a tight lead off back-to-back kills. UWG stayed within a three-point deficit until the hosts pushed their lead to 21-17 following an awkward volley that looked like it was going to be a Wolves point turned into a Queens' score. From here, the UWG offense stalled, leading to the hosts taking a 25-18 set one win.

The following set kicked off the two teams trading leads back and forth until a Royals' 9-0 scoring run off a combination of UWG attack errors and Queens' kills, resulted in the hosts' lead ballooning to 14-5. With the Wolves going on a 4-0 run featuring three kills by Cornett, UWG cut the deficit down to 16-12. The Wolves continued to battle, but were unable to overtake before the Royals reached 25. West Georgia fell 25-16.

After starting the finale neck-and-neck, the hosts from The Tar Heel State began to run away with it after UWG attack errors were followed up kill after kill for Queens. Before the Wolves could find their footing, the Royals were up 18-8, forcing West Georgia to call their second timeout of the set. Unfortunately, Queens went on to win 25-9 as the Wolves could not get anything going on offense.
