Weekend in Florida Opens with 3-0 Loss to FGCU

FORT MEYERS, Fla, - West Georgia volleyball opened its weekend in Florida tonight, falling to the FGCU Eagles, 3-0. The Wolves get back into the ASUN action on Sunday (Oct. 3), facing off against Stetson at 1 p.m.

With the UWG (2-14, 0-3 ASUN) offense struggling to secure points once breaking past the double-digit mark, Florida Gulf Coast (8-5, 3-0 ASUN) was able to secure their third straight conference victory, 25-14, 25-14 and 25-17.

The Wolves were led today by outside hitter Valiree Schmus with seven points. Outside hitter Molly Brunell posted a career-high two blocks.

MATCH DETAILS
With Sanai Young's three early scores pushing the pace, the Wolves opened the first set neck-in-neck, trailing just 10-8 to the formidable Eagles. Over the next few volleys, FGCU distanced themselves by on three service aces and multiple UWG errors. By the time the hosts' offense slowed, West Georgia found themselves down 20-11, with the Eagles on a 6-0 run. FGCU went on to win 25-14.

The following set opened with Florida Gulf Coast jumping out to an 8-2 advantage, as the Wolves could not get anything going on offense. That was until a block by Young sparked the Pack to go on a 7-3 run, which was highlighted by kills from Rylee Henderson and Schmus. This counterattack resulted in FGCU holding a tight 11-9 lead. Out of the hosts' timeout, it was all Florida Gulf Coast the rest of the way. The 25-14 set two win by FGCU was secured on a 14-4 Eagles' run.

The third and final set of the match kicked off with the Wolves jumping out to a 6-1 lead thanks to a pair of kills by Grace-Blythe Cornett, one by Henderson and two blocks by Molly Brunell. Despite FGCU storming back on a flurry of kills, the Wolves continued to battle, with Schmus leading the way. Like the opening two sets, once the teams reached 13 points, the Wolves' offense began to sputter. UWG would fall 25-17 with the Wolves securing two late points off a FGCU service error and an Addy Franz kill.
