Wolves Topped by Hatters

DELAND, Fla. - UWG volleyball's weekend in Florida ended today with a 3-0 defeat to Stetson in the Insight Credit Union Arena at Edmunds Center.

Despite falling in its away match, West Georgia (2-15, 0-4 ASUN) demonstrated a valiant effort, highlighted by the Wolves forcing the Hatters (6-10, 2-2 ASUN) to secure their set two win in extra points, and overcoming a nine-point deficit while down two sets to put the team in position to win in set three.

The Wolves were led by right side hitter Grace-Blythe Cornett with a UWG-high 16 points while tying her career-high 15 kills. Middle blockers Sanai Young and Alex Strating followed with ten and seven points, respectively. Setter Addy Franz posted a career-high five points and three service aces.

MATCH DETAILS
The Hatters opened today's match jumping out to a 4-0 lead, securing three points from UWG attack errors. Following a slow start, Valiree Schmus and Young kicked-started the Wolves' offense with a block. With Franz setting up assist after assist to the Pack, West Georgia caught back up, knotting the game at 6-6. Trading blows over the next few volleys, the match was tied three more times until a 4-0 run by Stetson gave the hosts a 13-9 advantage. Settling back in, Cornett and Rylee Henderson each tallied a kill, putting the Wolves back within striking distance. Responding to this attack, the Hatters' advantage grew to 20-14. Despite the Wolves closing the gap to 21-17, SU overcame the comeback to win 25-17.

Featuring a pair of kills from Cornett and Young, and two service aces by Schmus, the Wolves opened the second set with an 11-4 lead. Following the electric start, the Hatters chipped away at their deficit until they locked it up at 13-13. With the two teams trading scores, the match was tied three more times and the lead changed six times until UWG held a 24-22 advantage. Securing points from two kills and a pair of attack errors, Stetson pulled out a 26-24 set two win. By this point in the match, Young led the way for the Wolves with nine points while recording a stellar .438 hitting percentage.

With Stetson starting off set three on an 11-2 lead, it looked like the Wolves were completely out of it in the finale. Demonstrating great resilience, UWG came alive by going on a 4-0 run, which featured back-to-back points by Olivia Kremer and a seven-point run, dashing the Hatters' advantage to 18-15. With Cornett continuing her highlight performance, the redshirt sophomore added two more kills to her tally, bringing the hosts' lead to 19-18. Staying within a two-point range, the Wolves were in prime position to overtake until three straight scores secured the Hatters a 25-20 win.
