CARROLLTON, Ga. - The University of West Georgia Volleyball team fell short to the Stetson Hatters in four sets on Friday night.
UWG (2-22, ASUN 0-11) fell short on Halloween to Stetson (9-14, ASUN 5-6) at the Coliseum.
In the first set, the Hatters jumped out to a 4-1 lead early in the set but the Wolves were able to counter with a few points of their own bringing their deficit to 7-6. Mackenzie Yoakum and Olivia Kremer both gave West Georgia a spark with Yoakum laying down a kill and Kremer with an ace. Stetson would then pull away going on a 10-4 run to win the first set 25-17 to go up 1-0 in the match.
In the second set, West Georgia came out firing on all cylinders jumping out to a commanding 8-1 lead. Grace-Blythe Cornett would be the anchor behind this Wolves run laying down 3 kills. The Hatters would eventually start to find some momentum and slowly started to cut the lead down until it was tied even at 23-23. Stetson would then go on a 3-1 run to close the set 26-24 and take a 2-0 match lead.
The third set mirrored the previous one, with UWG racing out to an early 5-0 lead. Stetson quickly responded with a 5-0 run of their own, evening the score at five apiece. From there, it was a tightly contested battle featuring multiple lead changes. The Wolves tied things up at 20-20 late in the set behind key kills from Alex Strating and Valiree Schmus. Facing the possibility of a sweep, West Georgia found new life, closing on a 5-3 run to take the set 25-23 and cut Stetson's match lead to 2-1.
Stetson came out firing in the fourth set, jumping to a commanding 7-0 lead. UWG fought back with a few points of their own, but the Hatters held strong, never losing control. Stetson closed out the set 25-21 to secure the 3-1 match victory.
The Wolves will be back in action at The Coliseum on Sunday, with a 12 p.m. matchup with the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles.
