Sunday ASUN Action Results in Tight 3-2 Loss to FGCU

CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG volleyball was outlasted by Florida Gulf Coast University today in The Coliseum, losing 3-2 to top-ranked Eagles in a competitive five-set match.

After falling behind a pair of sets, UWG (2-23, 0-12 ASUN) responded by dominating set three and staging a come-from-behind set four win against FGCU (15-8, 9-3 ASUN) to force their first fifth-set match of conference play this season. Sadly, the Eagles would secure a 3-2 win after staging a late 4-0 run in the finale, pushing their all-time series lead to 4-0 over UWG.

The Wolves were led today by Valiree Schmus with a career-high 20 points and 17 kills. Following Schmus, Rylee Henderson tallied a career-high 17 points and 16 kills. For the seventh time this season, Addy Franz recorded a double-double, finishing today with a team-high 43 assists and a personal best 23 digs. Maggie Kachmarik tied her season-high dig total of 12, marking the second consecutive match she achieved the figure. Sanai Young recorded a team-high eight blocks for the second time this season. As a team, the Wolves posted 12 blocks, second only to the 13-block performance they recorded against UNC Greensboro earlier this year (Sept. 13).

MATCH DETAILS
With the Wolves opening today's match striking at a .091 hitting percentage and FGCU recording a .667, the Eagles were able to create an 11-3 lead while forcing the Wolves to burn both of their timeouts early on. Out of the second break, the Eagles tallied two more scores, but the Wolves responded with a 5-0 run highlighted by three Schmus kills, cutting the visitors' advantage to 14-8 and forcing the Eagles to call a break in the action. Staying at a six-point deficit, it felt like at any moment the Wolves could storm back to put themselves in position to win. Unfortunately, a stall in the UWG offense led to the visitors grabbing a 25-15 set one victory.

Similar to the opening set, the Wolves found themselves down five points before being able to get on the board. Out of an early UWG timeout, the Pack would go on a blocking tear. Of the opening six West Georgia points, four came from blocks. Now with the Wolves on the Eagles' heels, both teams traded scores over the next few volleys. At this point, Alex Strating pushed the pace for the Wolves with her 5.5 points, driving the slow but steady UWG comeback. Knotting the game at 11-11, the Pack was playing with high energy, and it was showing on the scoreboard. Trading points back and forth, the Wolves were unable to take the lead, but were still right there with the Eagles. With FGCU tallying a flurry of kills, UWG fell behind 21-16, but continued to battle. Going on a 3-0 run featuring another Strating kill and a Franz service ace, UWG dashed its deficit to 21-19. Following a score from each team, Schmus knotted the game up at 22-22 off back-to-back service aces. Sadly, a pair of Eagle kills and a UWG service error secured the visitors a 25-23 set two win before West Georgia could overtake. During this set, Strating showcased her power and athleticism when she rushed the net to rocket back floating FGCU volleys with thunderous kills. The middle blocker used this aggressive attack at the net successfully twice.

Today's third set kicked off with the Wolves jumping out to a 10-4 advantage with Schmus and Strating both continuing to lead the way for UWG in scoring, but Young and Henderson were right behind. Using great communication and smooth rotations, the Pack created a 17-9 lead before the FGCU Eagles knew what hit them. It was not just one or two Wolves tallying points to give UWG their biggest advantage of the day, but it was a true team effort reflected by the match-high .333 team hitting percentage. Despite the Eagles stringing together a late four-point run, UWG was able to hold on to win 25-18.

The fourth set between the Eagles and the Wolves was arguably the most competitive set of the day. It felt like each time one squad would score, the other team would respond in kind, preventing anyone from breaking away. By the time the match was knotted up at 14-14, the match had been tied 10 times. With the game at 14 each, the visitors tallied three straight points from a pair of kills and a UWG attack error to take a 17-14 lead. Staying on the Eagles' tails, UWG was able to claw their way back to lock the game at 20-20 after the Wolves tallied points from two FGCU errors and a block by the Pack. With the Eagles recording back-to-back points, it looked like they might run away with it until UWG responded with two of their own scores to lock the game at 23-23. Going past the 25-mark, UWG was able to secure a 28-26 win after Schmus recorded a kill and service ace. This victory marked the first time this season that the Wolves took two sets and forced a fifth in a conference match.

Today's finale continued to be a competitive match between the Wolves and one of the top teams in the ASUN. Opening things up with another block by Young, the two teams were trading scores until FGCU grabbed an 8-6 lead after tallying a pair of points from an Eagles' kill and a UWG attack error. Storming back, UWG was able to overtake at 10-9 after Henderson recorded two kills and FGCU committed an error. The rest of the way was marked by the teams trading blows, but FGCU ultimately came out on top after putting together a 4-0 run to win 15-12.
