Late Offense Pushes Queens Past West Georgia in ASUN Play

CHARLOTTE, N.C.- The Wolves hit the road for another ASUN Conference match on Sunday afternoon, falling 3-0 to Queens University at the Queens Sports Complex. Despite a strong second-half effort, the Wolves dropped to 3-11 overall and 1-4 in ASUN play.

Queens (3-7-3, 2-3-0 ASUN) scored their first goal in the 35th minute when Sejla Podzic found the back of the net off a well placed pass from Shion Hwang. The goal was Podzic's second of the season, while Hwang notched her first assist.

The Royals controlled possession for much of the opening half, generating nine shots and six corner kicks before halftime. West Georgia's defense was anchored by freshman goalkeeper Emily Sanabria. Sanabria recorded three first-half saves to keep the deficit manageable heading into the break.

In the second half, UWG began to establish themselves offensively. Sophomore forward Campbell Taylor led the attack with three shots, with one being on target as the Wolves pushed forward searching for the equalizer. Isa Ramirez also added a shot on goal, forcing Queens goalkeeper Hannah Dike-Lawlor into a pair of saves to preserve the lead.

After only scoring one goal for the majority of the match, Queens extended their lead late with two goals in the closing minutes. In the 87th minute of play, with just three minutes remaining, Helena Merkle scored her third goal of the year off an assist from Tamia Ford. Less than a minute later, Ford added her second goal of the season, with Merkle providing the assist.

By the final whistle, Queens outshot West Georgia 18-7 and held an 8-0 edge in corner kicks. Sanabria finished with four saves in 90 minutes of action, while Dike-Lawlor earned the shutout with two saves for the Royals.

West Georgia will face Queens again in their next match, set for Sunday, October 12, at 2 p.m. at University Soccer Field in Carrollton.
