Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

Friday Night Victory Pushes Wolves’ Winning Streak to Three

CARROLLTON, Ga- UWG men's basketball took a 72-64 victory tonight (Nov. 21) over the USC Upstate Spartans to extend its winning streak to three, the biggest streak since the Wolves elevated to DI.

Highlighted by Shelton Williams-Dryden's third consecutive double-double and JaVar Daniel's first-ever double-double, UWG (4-2) stayed perfect at home with tonight's win over USC Upstate (3-4).

Williams-Dryden led the Wolves with 22 points and a career-high 17 rebounds while shooting 44 percent (8-18) from the field and 100 percent (6-6) from the line. Daniel scored 10 points and tied his career-high of 11 rebounds while shooting 67 percent (4-6) from the field and 100 percent (2-2) from the line. USC Upstate was led by Mason Bendinger with 21 points.

"I thought our guys battled. I thought Shelton (Williams-Dryden) did a good job taking the ball out, and getting it to the right guys," said head coach Dave Moore. "We had a turnover or two there late, but all-and-all, I'm happy with the effort, and I'm certainly happy with the win." The full post game press conference with coach Moore and Williams-Dryden can be found at the bottom of the page.

The Friday home clash kicked off with the Wolves struggling to hit its shots. By the time UWG knocked down its first basket, USC Upstate had already tallied eight, four minutes into the game.

Fueled by Williams-Dryden's four points, UWG strung together a 10-0 scoring run to take a 10-8 lead by the 12-minute media timeout.

With forward Kenneth Chime and guard Eric Baldassarre adding seven to the total, UWG was able to create a 21-17 lead over the visitors from South Carolina.

With only three minutes left in the half, West Georgia led 29-23 with JaVar Daniel joining in on the fun by going a perfect 4-for-4 from the field for eight points.

Daniel was not the only Wolf to finish perfect in the first half. Baldassarre added six points from his pair of three-pointers and wing Kolten Griffin totaled four from his two shots. Williams-Dryden led the Wolves at the break with 10 points, with the Pack up 32-28.

Flipping the script from how they started the first period, UWG opened the second on a 7-0 run to jump out to a 39-28 advantage. This run was fueled by guard Josh Smith knocking down the first five points.

Smith continued to stay on fire in the second period, draining 12 of the opening 18 UWG points to give the Wolves a 50-43 advantage.

With the Spartans going on a 7-0 run, the visitors dashed its deficit to 56-53 with under seven minutes to play.

UWG responded to push back out in front 66-55, ultimately leading to the Wolves taking a 72-64 win over the Spartans after Williams-Dryden knocked down four late free throws to put the game to bed.

The Wolves hit the road to take on Georgia Tech this Sunday (Nov. 23) at 2 p.m. A preview and game notes will be posted tomorrow.
