Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | DeAngelo Hines

Late Rally Secures First Road Win of the Season

Tallahassee, FL- After a late fourth-quarter surge, the University of West Georgia women's basketball team earned its first road win of the season, defeating Florida A&M 72–57 in Tallahassee.

In a tightly contested battle, UWG (6–4) secured its first road win of the season against FAMU (0–10), led by balanced scoring from four players in double figures.

"Our first win on the road, I'm really proud of the team for that," said Coach Joanna Reitz. "We started really strong and finished really strong."

The Wolves jumped out to a fast start against the Rattlers, as Jasmine Jones knocked down two early three-pointers to spark an 8-2 lead. UWG kept the pressure on as the quarter progressed, extending the lead to double digits following back-to-back buckets from Destiny Jones. West Georgia also found its rhythm on the defensive end, forcing eight FAMU turnovers in the opening quarter and converting them into 14 points. Sydne Tolbert added to the momentum, shooting 2-of-3 from the field in the first quarter. Behind six points each from J.Jones and Tolbert, the Wolves carried a 19-11 lead into the first break.

West Georgia's offensive momentum slowed in the second quarter, as the Wolves were held to 13 points, but their defense continued to cause problems for the Rattlers. UWG forced 12 turnovers in the first half and capitalized with 18 points off those miscues. Florida A&M found some late success in the quarter, outscoring the Wolves by two, but West Georgia maintained control and carried a 32-26 lead into halftime.

Florida A&M opened the second half on a 10-4 run to trim the deficit to one, eventually tying the game at 36. The Rattlers controlled the early moments of the third quarter, but the Wolves responded late, slowing FAMU's momentum and regaining a two-point edge. West Georgia entered the fourth quarter holding on to a 46-44 lead.

The fourth quarter opened with a back-and-forth battle, as neither team could gain separation, resulting in seven ties and two lead changes. Florida A&M would gain its first lead of the game, 48-46, with nine minutes remaining. Following the media timeout, West Georgia responded and never looked back. Gal-la Font and Sydne Tolbert each delivered crucial baskets to swing the momentum, igniting a dominant 20-4 run down the stretch. UWG pulled away late to close out the game with a 72–57 victory over FAMU.

"Winning on the road is hard, but I'm proud of us for gutting it out," said Reitz. "There will always be adversity, but I was really proud of how the team stayed together through it tonight," Reitz concluded.

The Wolves return to action on Sunday, December 28, for a non-conference matchup against the Brewton Parker Barons at The Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m.
