Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | Jared Boggus

UWG's Red-Hot Offense Leads to Midday Victory over UNC Wilmington

CARROLLTON, Ga. - In front of the most fans ever at a UWG women's basketball game at The Coliseum, the Wolves ran off with an 83-63 victory over UNC Wilmington.

UWG remained undefeated in front of a women's basketball record 2,267 fans that was made up primarily of local elementary school students in attendance on Wednesday morning, and the Wolves put on a show for their young fans. West Georgia had two scorers with 20-point games and three in double-figures.

"That was a really good game for us. We're grateful to all the local students and staff who came out to support us today," Reitz said. "We're proud to represent the University of West Georgia and the Carrollton community."

Asia Donald had a game-high 23 while Sydne Tolbert added 20 and Jasmine Jones finished with 17. Jones had a game-high five assists to lead UWG in that category.

As a team, UWG shot 56.9 percent from the field including a red-hot 59.1 percent from three-point range, hitting 13 of their 22 long-range attempts.

UNCW scored the game's opening bucket and then the Wolves never trailed again in the contest, and led by as much as 23 in the game.

The Wolves rode the energy in the opening quarter, leading by as much as 14 points in the period. UWG hit four three-pointers in the opening quarter alone, and got a big boost at the buzzer as Becca Ledford hit a put-back layup and beat the clock to make it a 25-14 lead after 10 minutes.

In quarter number two, it was tighter with the Wolves outscoring the Seahawks 14-13. West Georgia led by 15 at 39-24 late until UNCW's Paige Smith hit a three with 13 seconds left to make the Wolves' lead 39-27 at the break.

Asia Donald and Sydne Tolbert led the Wolves in the opening half, combining for 18 of the Wolves' 39 first half points. Tolbert was 3-for-3 from the field including 2-for-2 from the arc in the first 10 minutes.

In the third quarter, UWG extended the lead to as many as 16 points before UNC Wilmington briefly got the game to a single-digit margin, cutting it as close as eight with just over two minutes left in the third.

West Georgia cruised in the final period, outscoring the Seahawks 26-16 and reaching their largest lead at the 2:00 mark.

"Our commitment to playing together, moving the basketball, and taking great shots helped us in the fourth quarter to be able to close out the game," Reitz concluded.

Tolbert finished 7-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from three-point range while Donald also had seven makes in her 12 attempts from the field.

UWG had the edge in assists and rebounds, both by a slim margin. Destiny Jones led UWG on the glass with seven.

The Wolves are back in action this weekend on the road at South Carolin State. The game is slated for 4 p.m. on Sunday, December 7 from Orangeburg, South Carolina.
