Box Score The University of West Georgia women's basketball team came up just short in Sunday afternoon's matchup against South Carolina State.
UWG (4–3) came up short against South Carolina State (3–8), falling 69–62 in a nail-biter during Sunday afternoon's road matchup in Orangeburg, South Carolina.
In the first quarter, the Wolves got off to a slow start, trailing the Bulldogs 16–12 after the opening frame.
Jasmine Jones provided a spark, knocking down a three and adding a layup for five early points to keep UWG within striking distance.
In the second quarter, West Georgia started to build some momentum, stringing together a quick 7–0 run to open the period. South Carolina State answered with some late offense of their own, reclaiming the lead and heading into halftime up 26–25.
The third quarter belonged entirely to West Georgia, as the Wolves came out firing on all cylinders. Powered by clutch shot-making from
Asia Donald and
Sydne Tolbert, UWG poured in 24 points in the period and surged ahead to a 50–36 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The fourth quarter unraveled for West Georgia, as the Wolves gave up 33 points and were outscored by 21 in the final frame. South Carolina State was able to pull ahead late and never looked back, completing the comeback and securing a 69–62 victory.
Tolbert led the way for West Georgia with 18 points, followed by Donald with 12 and J. Jones adding 11.
The Wolves return to action next Sunday when they travel to Gainesville for a showdown with the Florida Gators. Tip off is scheduled for 2 p.m. ET.
