CARROLLTON, Ga. - Head women's basketball coach Joanna Reitz has announced the hiring of Ivey Slaughter as the Wolves' assistant coach.
Slaughter, a former standout at Florida State and professional player in Europe, comes to Carrollton to make the third stop in her coaching career. Most recently, Slaughter spent two seasons at Presbyterian which came after two seasons on staff at UNC Asheville.
"I'm thrilled to welcome Ivey to our coaching staff. Her experience as a player, both at the highest level of college basketball as well as professionally, in addition to four years coaching at the Division I level, have prepared her well to continue building our program as we take another step up to compete in the United Athletic Conference," said Reitz.
Over four seasons at Presbyterian and UNC Asheville combined, Slaughter was instrumental in the development of four All-Conference selections.
Slaughter returns to her home state as she is a native of Macon, where she prepped at Tatnall Square Academy before an impressive career at Florida State.
"In addition to her Georgia roots, she's spent time in Florida, North Carolina, and South Carolina establishing strong recruiting connections all throughout the Southeast. She will be an incredible mentor to our players and will be primarily responsible for coaching our forwards and post players."
At FSU, Slaughter started 132 of 137 career games played, numbers that rank second and third respectively all-time at FSU. She ranked fourth in made free throws (372), fourth in steals (222), and sixth in both free throw attempts (513) and rebounds (912).
Slaughter recorded an impressive 21 double-doubles throughout her college career. She was a two-time member of the All-ACC Academic Team and received the Alicia Gladden Defensive Player of the Year award during her sophomore year.
Following graduation in 2017, Slaughter was invited to training camps with the WNBA's New York Liberty and Las Vegas Aces before ultimately playing professionally in Hungary, Latvia, and Sweden.
The hire received high praise from Slaughter's former coach, FSU's all-time winningest coach, Sue Semrau.
"With the hiring of Ivey Slaugther, Coach Reitz adds a coach who is relentless, talented, and cares about the team first," said Semrau. "Having watched Ivey for a number of years, I have witnessed her strength, and ability to connect with people in a special way. The UWG Family got a great one!"
