UWG Drops Road Game to EKU Colonels

RICHMOND, Ky. -The UWG men's basketball team fell 95-73 to the Colonels of EKU tonight in the first of two consecutive Kentucky road games.

West Georgia's (4-22, 2-11 ASUN) early double-digit lead was not enough to overcome Eastern Kentucky's (15-11, 9-4 ASUN) explosive scoring runs. EKU outscored the Wolves 44-27 in the second half while shooting 55 percent from the field and 50 percent from three, propelling the themselves to a conference win.

Following a tough shooting performance against the UNA Lions (Feb. 8), forward Shelton Williams-Dryden rebounded with a 21 point night, shooting a stellar 64 percent from the field. Behind Williams-Dryden, Kyric Davis and Malcolm Noel both scored nine. Brady Hardewig finished with personal-best eight points and Michael Griffin posted a season-high seven points.

With EKU missing their leading scorer, the Colonels were led by forward Mayar Wol with 25 points. Behind Wol, Jordan Crawford scored 22 and Devonte Blanton knocked down 20.

Following the game, coach Dave Moore described what he saw tonight, stating, "I thought we ran out of gas a little bit. EKU plays a really fast-paced game. They want to play in transition. I thought for the most part we did a good job taking care of the ball, breaking pressure and we were attacking their press. Losing Kolten Griffin for the second half hurt us. Takes away our best perimeter defender. We ran out of steam in the second half. They go 8-for-16 from three and we go 2-for-10 from three, and that's the game."

Tonight, the Colonels opened the game living and dying by the three, starting off 1-for-5 from deep, which allowed the Wolves to surge to an early 10-3 lead.

Back-to-back EKU threes by sophomore forward Mayer Wol helped the hosts cut the Wolves' lead to 23-19 with 11:42 remaining in the half. Williams-Dryden was pushing the West Georgia pace early, draining 10 by this point.

Over the next five minutes, the Wolves continued to attack from the paint, scoring 20 of their 32 points from close range to secure a 32-22 advantage. With seven points each, guards Michael Griffin and Noel provided crucial early UWG support alongside Williams-Dryden.

The Colonels closed out the period going on a 29-14 scoring run to jump out to a 51-46 first half advantage. Williams-Dryden posted a team-high 14 points while shooting a superb 70 percent. Mayer led the Colonels with 13, shooting 50 percent. Despite trailing, West Georgia found success in the paint, outscoring the hosts 28-12 down low. UWG finished the period shooting 58 percent from the field and 67 percent from three, while EKU shot 49 percent from the field and 44 percent from three.

Capitalizing off of a slow start from West Georgia, the Colonels carried their first half scoring run into second. Striking from within the paint, EKU extended their lead to 62-48 by the first media timeout.

The high-scoring ASUN action continued with the hosts controlling the pace as the Wolves fought to keep in stride. With under 13 minutes remaining, Eastern Kentucky extended their lead to 73-53, as they outshot UWG 57 to 27 percent from the field.

Despite being down big, the Wolves came out of the second minute timeout fighting. UWG battled back with a balanced scoring attack, cutting the deficit to 80-69. Demetrus Johnson II paced the team with six second-half points, while three other Wolves chipped in with five points apiece by this moment.

Even with this valiant effort, EKU answered the Wolves' scoring run with one of their own. UWG trailed 92-69 with five minutes remaining.

West Georgia went on to fall 95-73 to the Colonels.

For the 15th time this season, UWG was led by Williams-Dryden with 21 points. This marks his 10th 20-point performance. Behind him, Davis and Noel both scored nine. After tying his career-high of six points against UNA, Hardewig posted a personal-best eight points tonight. Michael Griffin also knocked in a season-high seven points.

Eastern Kentucky secured tonight's victory with a balanced scoring attack, featuring three players who scored over 20 points. This even scoring distrubution proved to be particularly crucial given the absence of leading scorer George Kimble, who averages 18 points a game.

The biggest difference tonight was from beyond the arc. EKU knocked down 16 three-pointers shooting 47 percent, and UWG hit six while shooting 36 percent.

The Wolves stay in Kentucky to take on the Bellarmine University Knights this Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
