Wolves Soar to 18-3 Victory in Division I Debut

CARROLLTON, Ga. - UWG baseball crushed the New Orleans Privateers 18-3, securing the Wolves their first ever win as a Division I program. West Georgia and UNO return to Cole Field tomorrow for a doubleheader with first pitch set for 2 p.m.

A 19-8 hitting advantage and a dominant pitching performance from Lane Pearson propelled the Wolves (1-0) to a convincing victory over the UNO Privateers (0-1) on Opening Day.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith described what this moment meant to the program, stating, "It's a great start for our team. I was really happy with the way we responded in the first inning. But like I told our guys, we have 55 games left. Everyday is a new day. We have to play consistent baseball in order to compete."

Following a two-year medical redshirt absence, senior pitcher Lane Pearson made his UWG debut as the Wolves' 2025 Opening Day starter. On the mound for the Privateers today was senior Grant Edwards. Last year, Edwards posted a 5-5 record in 15 starts. In his 73 innings of work, Edwards finished with a 6.41 ERA and struck out 67 batters.

The Privateers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the first inning when Brian Lorgia blasted a home run over the left field fence, with the ball crashing into the UWG scoreboard. The Wolves quickly responded with Noah Darden starting the run-fest with a RBI single. Then, Landon Weidner put UWG ahead for the first time this season with another West Georgia RBI single. Brady McDevitt closed out the scoring with a double to right field that drove in three Wolves. UWG wrapped up its first ever DI inning with a 5-1 lead.

In the third frame, the Wolves loaded the bases again, putting themselves in a prime position to score. Brady McDevitt immediately took advantage of this opportunity, doubling to left to drive in two runners. Contributing to a dominant third inning, Cooper Prince, the Wolves' 2024 leading hitter, crushed a triple over the left fielder's head to drive in two Wolves, propelling UWG to a 9-1 lead.

In a highlight-reel moment during the fourth inning, right fielder Landon Weidner made a spectacular defensive play, robbing a Privateer of a home run at the fence.

The Wolves continued to pour it on in the fifth, pushing their lead to 13-1 off of a two-run double by Carter Dierdorf, a single RBI by Patrick McCullough and a double RBI by Weidner.

In the seventh, Lane Pearson was relieved of his pitching duties by Brendan Parks. Pearson finished the day with seven strikeouts while allowing only four hits and one run on his 23 batters he faced. In this inning, UNO hit their second homer of the day to cut the Wolves' lead to 13-2. During the bottom of the seventh, UWG answered with RBIs by McCullough, Darden and Blake Bradford to push the West Georgia advantage to 16-2.

UNO scored one more run in the eighth, and the Wolves quickly answered with a pair of RBIs by McCullough and Weidner.

UWG went on to secure its first ever Division I win, 18-3.

NOTABLE NUMBERS

In a triumphant return after a two-year medical redshirt, Lane Pearson made statement performance, striking out seven of 23 batters faced while limiting the opposition to four hits and just one run.

"It's great to have Lane back healthy. We have all of the confidence in him, and tonight was just a glimpse of how good he is." said coach Smith after the game.

As mentioned, UWG finished the day out-hitting UNO 19-8. Noah Darden posted a team-high five hits, followed by Cooper Prince with four and Landon Weidner with three. Brady McDevitt led the way with four RBIs off of two hits.
