UWG Splits Saturday Doubleheader

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball split Saturday's gloomy and wet doubleheader to the Privateers of New Orleans, bringing the series record to 2-1 with one game remaining. UPDATE- Game four has been canceled due to wet field conditions.

The Wolves (2-1) claimed game one of today's DH 11-10 on a walk-off sacrifice fly by Cooper Prince, but the Privateers (1-2) responded with a decisive 13-6 victory in game two, fueled by an explosive fifth inning. This contest was shortened to five frames due to fog causing unsafe playing conditions.

Following the games, head coach Jeff Smith talked about what he saw today, stating, "I really like how the guys are playing in the box. I think the plate discipline has been extremely good. I am very pleased with our energy, our competitiveness and the way the team is playing."

GAME ONE
Making his debut on the mound for the Wolves today was Saint Leo transfer Sam Cole, while senior Zach Longshore took on the pitching duties for the Privateers.

Despite the rain and fog, the UWG faithful who were packed under the Cole Field awning witnessed a thrilling start to the game as Cooper Prince led off with a triple on the very first pitch. The Wolves finished the first frame up 1-0 after Prince was driven in on a shot to right field by Patrick McCullough

In the second, excellent pitching by Sam Cole helped UWG escape the jam with a pair of Privateers left stranded at second and third.

The Wolves held a tight 1-0 lead until a UNO wild pitch got lost in the dirt, allowing Jack Witmer to steal home.

The Privateers scored their first run of the day in the fifth inning with a sacrifice RBI. However, the Wolves were fortunate to escape further damage as UNO had loaded the bases with no outs earlier in the frame. During the bottom of the fifth, Noah Darden had the UWG faithful on their feet when he jacked a grand slam over the right field fence, pushing the Wolves' advantage to 6-1. This was the first West Georgia homer of the season.

Taking over the UWG pitching duties in the sixth was Bryan Gomez. Cole finished the day giving up four hits and one run, while striking out three of the 22 batters he faced. In this inning, UNO dashed the West Georgia advantage to 6-4, but the Wolves responded with a Blake Bradford homer over the right fielder's head.

During the seventh, UNO answered with another homer, ending Gomez's day on the mound. He would be replaced by Davis Williams. In the next two at-bats, the Privateers crushed another two home runs to lock the game up at 7-7. Continuing today's trend of sending pitches into outer space, Carter Dierdorf pushed the Wolves back out in front, 8-7, with a homer in the seventh.

In the following inning, Gomez was relieved of his pitching duties by Dosie Drakeford. For the first time since the opening inning of the series, UNO jumped out to a 10-8 lead. The Wolves didn't wait long to respond, tying the game off of back-to-back RBIs by Dierford and McCullough in the eighth.

With Gavin Mask taking the mound for UWG in the ninth, the Wolves were quickly able to close out the top of the frame locked up at 10-10. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the frame, Prince popped a walk-off sacrifice fly to center, securing the Wolves a 11-10 win.

Offensively, Patrick McCullough led the way for the Wolves. In his four at-bats, the senior second baseman tallied three hits, two RBIs, one run and was walked. As a team, UNO out-hit West Georgia 13-12.

GAME TWO
In game two of today's doubleheader, senior pitcher Seth Dudley was on the mound for the Wolves, while the UNO pitched Southwest Mississippi Community College transfer Matthew Bienvenu.

The Privateers jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning, fueled by an RBI double and a two-run home run that just snuck inside the right field pole. The first ended with the visitors up 3-1 after a walked batter with the bases loaded brought Cooper Prince home.

UNO stayed out in front 3-1 until Carter Dierdorf crushed a two-run homer to tie the game at three apiece. This long shot was his second home run of the day, bringing the combined home run total for both teams to 12 in the series..

Keeping the high-scoring trend alive, New Orleans immediately jumped back out to a comfortable lead, going up 7-3 in the third. Before the inning was over, UWG had cut the lead to 7-5 after a passed ball and a balk brought two Wolves in.

The UWG scoring continued in the fourth, with the Wolves dashing the UNO advantage to 7-6 off of an Blake Bradford RBI double.

Prior to the first pitch of the fifth, Seth Dudley's mound duties came to an end as he was replaced by Will Dean. In four frames of work, Dudley finished striking out six of the 20 batters he faced, while giving up eight hits and seven runs. The Privateers unleashed a barrage of hits in the fifth inning, propelling them to a 13-6 lead. The game would be called here due to fog causing unsafe playing conditions.

Five different Wolves tallied a hit in game two. The Privateers issued eight walks, three more than the number of hits they allowed. UNO won the hitting battle 14-5.

When talking about today's packed house despite inclement weather, coach Smith stated, "It's huge for our program to look up into the stands and see it filled. The guys can feel the energy. It's huge for our players."
