Bobcats Balance Three-Game Series at One Apiece

CARROLLTON, Ga. -Ā West Georgia baseball fell to the Ohio Bobcats 4-2, splitting the three-game series 1-1 with a finale set for Sunday. First pitch is at 12 p.m. at Cole FieldĀ

In a tightly contested, low-scoring game, UWG (3-2) could not convert its hits into runs, resulting in a first win for Ohio (1-4) this season.Ā West Georgia left a total of 14 players stranded on base to the Bobcats' six.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about what he saw today, stating, "I think it came down to our situational batting. We didn't execute two bunts and we couldn't move the ball to drive runners home. Overall, we played well and I think they played well. Ohio is a really good team. I'm happy with how the guys played at the end. They showed a lot of fight. I'm proud of the guys and I'm excited for tomorrow."

Coming off of a solid showing on the mound, the Wolves pitched right-handed junior Sam Cole. Prior to today, Cole posted a 1.80 ERA, tied for tenth in the ASUN with Brendan Parks. The Bobcats started with left-handed graduate student Jacob Tate. He posted a 54.00 ERA after giving up four runs off of his three hits in .2 innings of work against Wofford.Ā

With the bases loaded in the second, it looked like the Wolves were going to take the first lead of the day, but a Bobcats' pitching change helped Ohio to escape the inning still locked up at 0-0.Ā

That near-miss for UWG was quickly followed by a critical turn in the contest. In Ohio's opening at-bat during the third, the Bobcats' first baseman, Dy Shepard, blasted a solo home run to give Ohio their first lead of the series. The visitors ended the frame with a tight 1-0 advantage.Ā

During the fifth, the Bobcats extended their lead to 3-0 off of an RBI and then a passed ball that allowed a runner to score. Still in the fifth, UWG put its first points on the board after a wild pitch enabled shortstop Jacob Bowman to take home. First baseman Carter Dierdorf then cracked an RBI single through the right side to drive center fielder Cooper Prince across the plate. UWG trailed 3-2 going into the sixth.Ā

Continuing the scoring trend that was seen in the last few innings, the Bobcats answered with a sacrifice bunt to push their advantage to 4-2 in the sixth.

Heading into the seventh, the Wolves replaced Sam Cole on the mound with right-handed junior Bryan Gomez. In his six frames of work, the Bobcats secured four runs off of seven hits. Cole struck out five batters to bring his season total to eight.Ā

Notably, in both the sixth and seventh innings, the Bobcats managed to escape bases-loaded situations, something that would be pivotal in today's result.

During the final inning, the Wolves placed two batters on base, but the Bobcats again would escape the danger unscathed. Ohio held on to secure a 4-2 win over the Wolves.Ā

BY THE NUMBERS
As mentioned, UWG left a total of 14 Wolves stranded on base today. This tally was fueled by the three separate frames that the Bobcats escaped with the bases loaded.Ā

Looking at the other team statistics, UWG led in hits 9-8, but were struck out more, 11-5.

Bryan Gomez pitched three scoreless innings today, giving upĀ just one hit.

Right fielder Landon Weidner and catcher Hank Smith led the Wolves with two hits apiece.

UP NEXT
The series closes out the series tomorrow with game three. First pitch is set for 12 p.m. at Cole Field.Ā

The Wolves are expected to pitch red-handed Senior Seth Dudley. In last week's game three against UNO, Dudley stuck out six batters while giving up seven runs off of eight hits. It is unclear who start for the Bobcats tomorrow.Ā
