Wolves Fall to Lions at Home

CARROLLTON, Ga. -The UWG men's basketball team dropped Saturday's conference clash 78-61 to old Division II rivals, North Alabama, in the series' 68th ever meeting.

UWG (4-21, 2-10 ASUN) was unable to find their offensive rhythm, finishing 38 percent from the field and 18 percent from three, leading to an ASUN victory for the North Alabama Lions (17-8, 9-3 ASUN).

Kolten Griffin led the way for UWG with 17 points. Behind Griffin, Demetrus Johnson II posted a career-high 13 points and Tamaury Releford scored 11.

The Lions finished with four players scoring double figures. UNA was led by Will Soucie with 17. Following Soucie, Donte Bacchus knocked down 16, Jacari Lane scored 14 and Corneilous Williams finished with 12.

"Give all the credit to North Alabama. They are a very good basketball team," said head coach Dave Moore following the game. "A lot of veteran guys. Tough, hardnose defenders. They are also really good on the backboard, and they showed that, especially in the first half. It was hard for us to get anything from below the foul line, and that's where we have been successful. They really limited that with us, especially in that first half. I thought we played better in the second, but that's a very good basketball team that is trying to win a championship this season."

In the opening six minutes, the visitors from Alabama jumped out to a 14-4 lead, capitalizing on the Wolves shooting 25 percent from the field while not being able to sink a shot from distance.

Midway through the period, UNA still held a double-digit advantage, up 26-10. The Lions grabbed this lead by continuing to exploit the UWG shooting woes.

The Wolves first made three-pointer came from Johnson at the 9:16 mark.

Heading into the break, UWG trailed 35-24 with Johnson posting a team-high nine points. Will Soucie led the Lions with eight points. West Georgia finished the half shooting 30 percent from the field and 20 percent from three, while the Lions hit 40 percent from the field and 10 percent from three. UNA found their success from the inside, outscoring the Wolves in the paint 26-8 and outrebounding UWG 35-24.

UNA opened the second on a 12–6 run to extend their lead to 47-30 with 15:44 left in the game.

The Lions continued to pull away, shooting over 60 percent from the field while the Wolves struggled to find their range from three-point land, leading to a 62-38 advantage with 11 minutes remaining.

Despite being down 24, the Wolves continued to fight. With Johnson and Griffn pushing the pace, UWG cut the visitors' lead to 66-48 with under seven to go in the game.

Each run UWG went on, the Lions answered in kind. UNA was just too much to handle, securing the 78-61 victory.

Kolten Griffin led the scoring charge for UWG for the third time this season. Today, the senior forward knocked down 17, shooting 58 percent from the field. This marks his third double-digit scoring game in the last four. For the third time this season, Demetrus Johnson II posted double scoring figures, finishing with a career-high 13 points while shooting 50 percent. As previously mentioned, Tamaury Releford was the third and final UWG player to break into double scoring figures, draining 11 points while shooting 50 percent. This is the big man's fourth game in the last six scoring double-digits.

Despite going into the half being outscored in the paint 26-8, the Wolves made up some ground in the second period, but ultimately were still outdone down low 44-34. UWG was also outrebounded 45-38.

West Georgia travels to face Eastern Kentucky University next Thursday, kicking off a three-game road swing, the last of the 2024-25 season.
