UWG Falls to #2 Tennessee in Knoxville

KNOXVILLE, Tenn-  The West Georgia baseball team dropped today's road game at Rocky Top 4-2 to the #2 Tennessee Volunteers.

UWG (8-7) battled with the defending National Champions, but the Volunteers' (17-0) ability to capitalize on two-out situations, led to UT grabbing today's win. Tennessee scored three of their four runs with two punch outs tacked against them. Despite losing, West Georgia held UT to their fewest points this season.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about today's contest, stating, "Our team competes. I don't have to worry about our guys showing up and not being ready to play. We walked some guys tonight that ended up scoring. We eliminate those errors and we are right there with them. Overall, I'm extremely proud of the guys. Tonight was a great showing for our program. It was a great showing for our alumni. We are excited to get into conference play this weekend."

Making his third start on the mound for UWG today was right-handed junior Evimael Quiles. Through 7.1 frames across two appearances, Qulies posted a 2.45 ERA with five strikeouts. Starting on the mound for Tennessee was freshman righty Brayden Krenzel. Coming into the game, Krenzel posted a 0.00 ERA with four strikeouts through 4.1 innings across four competitions.

It did not take long for UT to do what they do better than anyone else in the country, hit a home run. In the bottom of the first, the Volunteers went up 2-0 on their 50th homer of the year (five more than the next team).

During the second, it looked like the Wolves were going to strike after Landon Weidner opened the inning with a single that turned into a double off of a throwing error. UWG was able to add one more base runner to the mix, but UT did just enough to escape the top of the frame up 2-0. With two outs in the bottom of the inning, Tennessee loaded the bases off of a single, a walk and a hit by pitch. This streak ended Qulies' day on the mound, being relieved by right-handed senior Brendan Parks. In his 1.2 innings, Qulies struck out one batter and allowed just two runs after the Wolves were able to escape the frame still down 2-0.

In the third, lead-off hitter Cooper Prince put himself in scoring position with a double deep into right field. Following this, Brady McDevitt pushed Prince to third on a sacrifice bunt. Patrick McCullough finished things off by driving the senior center fielder home with a RBI groundout, dashing the hosts' lead to 2-1. In the bottom of this inning, Parks was replaced by right-handed junior Camden Diamond. Through his one frame, Parks struck out one batter and let up a hit.

Going into the bottom of the fifth, Diamond was relieved by right-handed junior Gavin Mask. In 1.1 innings, Diamond let up one hit and struck out one Volunteer. UT ended the inning holding a 3-1 advantage thanks to a strong shot sent down the left foul line that led to a run.

During the sixth, Tennessee added another run, extending their lead to 4-1. In this frame, Mask was replaced by Ian Moore, who was quickly changed out for fellow junior righty Bryan Gomez. Both Mask and Moore allowed one run in their lone frames.

Even with the Wolves finding themselves down 4-1, UWG stayed neck-and-neck with UT at the plate. Through seven innings, UT held a slight 5-4 hitting advantage. On defense, UWG tallied one double play and Landon Weidner made multiple run-saving catches in the outfield.

During the eighth, West Georgia dashed the hosts' lead to 4-2 thanks to a bomb hit by McDevitt that bounced off of the center field fence. Following a questionable call by the ump, McDevitt's triple was turned into an RBI with a tag-out at third.

Right-handed graduate student Dosie Drakeford took over the UWG pitching duties in the ninth. Through two frames, Gomez struck out one batter and prevented UT from getting a hit. In his one frame, Drakeford did not give up a hit.

The #2 Volunteers held on to win 4-2.

The Wolves return home to open conference play against Queens in a three-game weekend series this Friday. Due to expected inclement weather, the series will now start with a 2 p.m. Friday doubleheader.
