UWG Splits ASUN Opener

CARROLLTON, Ga. - West Georgia baseball kick-started its first-ever ASUN series falling in game one 8-4 to Queens, but bouncing back in game two with a 8-4 victory, marking the Wolves' first conference win. The teams return to Cole Field tomorrow for a series finale, which is set to now start at 1 p.m.

Three UWG (9-8) errors and a costly fifth inning led the Queens (3-15) taking game one, but the Wolves rebounded with an 8-4 victory thanks to a fourth inning grand slam by Jacob Bowman followed by homers by Noah Darden and Blake Bradford.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about what he saw out of the team today, stating, "I saw that the guys competed. Doubleheaders are tough. The team showed a lot of resilience after dropping game one. We just need to eliminate those mistakes. We gave them (Queens) too many freebies in the first one. We need to be better. Tomorrow is a quick turnaround. The guys need to get ready tonight. It's about who wants it the most, and who comes out and compete. I expect these guys to play at a high level tomorrow."

GAME ONE

Starting on the mound in game one for the Wolves was ASUN strikeout and ERA leader Lane Pearson. Coming into this first-ever ASUN matchup, Pearson led the conference with 36 strikeouts and was tied for first with a 1.88 ERA. For the visitors from the Tarheel State, they started right-handed sophomore Jack Renaud. In 11.2 innings across eight appearances, the 0-1 pitcher posted a 10.32 ERA with 11 strikeouts.

Through the first two innings, the game stayed locked up at zero apiece. That was until Carter Dierdorf drove a UWG player home on a sacrifice fly to center in the third. Following this, Landon Weidner pushed the Wolves' advantage to 3-0 on a hard-hit shot through the left side.

In the following frame, Mason Cooper crushed a base-hit RBI into center field, extending the UWG lead to 4-0.

In the fifth, the visitors tied the game at 4-4 after a questionable catcher's interference on a third-out play, gave the Royals an extra opportunity to score with bases loaded.

The sixth inning marked the ending of Pearson's day on the mound. Through five frames, Pearson struck out two batters and allowed six hits, but did not give up an earned run. He was replaced by senior righty Brendan Parks. During this inning, Queens took their first lead of the day after a UWG throwing error allowed two Royals to score.

In the seventh, Queens extended their advantage to 8-4 on back-to-back RBIs. Parks was relieved of his pitching duties by right-handed graduate student Dosie Drakeford. Through 1.1 frames, Parks allowed two runs and struck out a pair of Royals

Queens held on to win 8-4.

Through 2.2 innings on the mound, Drakeford struck out one batter and prevented the Royals from earning a run.

GAME TWO
Coming off of back-to-back complete-game performances, junior righty Sam Cole made his fourth start for the Wolves in today's game two. Going into this matchup, Cole posted a 3.00 ERA with 16 strikeouts. On the mound for Queens in the second contest was freshman utility player Ryan Brown. Through 12.2 innings across seven appearances this season, Brown posted a 7.82 ERA with six strikeouts.

Unlike game one, it did not take long for the Wolves to get going. During the first, Landon Weidner put UWG up 1-0 on a single that rocketed through the left side.

In the third, the Royals locked the conference contest back up at one apiece on a solo home run.

The game stayed locked up at 1-1 until Jacob Bowman crushed the Wolves' second grand slam of the year, propelling UWG to a 5-1 lead in the fourth.

During the fifth, Brady McDevitt pushed the UWG advantage to 6-1 on an RBI single into right field.

In the sixth, Queens scored on a hard-hit single to third, dashing the West Georgia advantage to 6-2. Following the score, Cole was relieved by right-handed junior Bryan Gomez. In 5.1 frames, Cole struck out four batters and allowed two runs. Still in the sixth, McDevitt made an incredible diving catch in foul territory to help the Wolves escape the top of the frame still up 6-2. UWG finished the frame holding a strong 7-2 lead thanks to a no-doubt Noah Darden homer in the bottom of the sixth.

During the eighth, Queens cut the UWG lead to 7-4 on a solo home run followed by a groundout RBI. In the bottom of the frame, Blake Bradford responded with a UWG homer, putting the Wolves up 8-4.

Going into the ninth, Gomez was replaced by right-handed pitcher Will Dean. Through 2.2 innings, Gomez struck out one batter and allowed two runs. Despite the Royals loading the bases in the frame, West Georiga escaped with an 8-4 conference victory.

In Dean's one inning, he struck out two batters and did not give up a hit.
