West Georgia Falls in Opening ASUN Series

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Following a day one doubleheader split with Queens, UWG baseball dropped its opening ASUN series after losing game three 6-3 to the Royals today at Cole Field.

The Wolves' (9-9, 1-2 ASUN) battled with the Royals (4-15, 2-1 ASUN) in game three, but a 12-5 hitting advantage led to the visitors taking an ASUN series victory back to North Carolina.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "We had 10 strikeouts at the plate. I felt like we were not using our zone discipline. We really struggled to put balls in play. We got to do a better job. On defense, we can't give them those walks or hit by pitches. That led to them scoring. We need to do a better job."

Starting on the mound for UWG today was right-handed senior Seth Dudley. Through 20.2 innings across four starts, Dudley posted a 5.23 ERA with 22 strikeouts. Queens went with sophomore right-handed pitcher Jack Renaud. In 13.1 innings, Renaud posted a 8.78 ERA with 12 strikeouts.

Today's series finale started off knotted at 0-0 until a third-inning Queens home run put the visitors ahead 2-0. Up until this point, Cole struck out a remarkable five batters and allowed four hits. In the bottom of the frame, UWG dashed the Royals' advantage to 2-1 thanks to a Noah Darden RBI.

During the fourth, West Georgia tied the game at two apiece on a solo home run by Tyler Presnell. This marked Presnell's first homer since the 2023 season.

With the bases loaded and one out in the fifth, it looked like the Royals were going to go back out in front, but clutch pitching by Cole helped UWG escape the jam with the game still tied at 2-2.

Heading into the seventh, Cole was relieved by right-handed junior Evimael Quiles. Through six frames, Cole tallied a season-high eight punch outs and allowed two runs. Following some trouble on the mound in which Queens was able to scrap three runs, Qulies rotated out for junior righty Camden Diamond. UWG trailed 5-2 going into the eighth.

Similarly to the fifth frame, it looked like the Royals were going to strike in the eighth after they loaded the bases. Thanks to solid pitching by Diamond and stout UWG defense, West Georgia escaped with the Royals still leading 5-2. In the bottom of the eighth, Cooper Prince cut the Queens' advantage to 5-3 after a wild throw by the catcher allowed him to take home.

The ninth inning started off with Diamond getting replaced by sophomore righty Davis Williams. In 1.1 frames, Diamond struck out one batter and gave up one run. Queens ended their last at-bat up 6-3 after a balk with the bases loaded led to a Royal scoring. In Williams' lone inning, the pitcher struck out one batter but did not give up a run.

Queens held on to win 6-3.
