UWG Baseball Erases Seven-Run Deficit to Secure Thrilling Home Win

CARROLLTON, Ga. -  West Georgia baseball staged an incredible comeback at Cole Field today, rallying from a 7-0 deficit to defeat the Georgia State Panthers 12-11. This out-of-conference win pushed the Wolves' overall series lead to 12-4-1 against the Panthers with one more head-to-head matchup remaining on the 2025 schedule.

A Tyler Presnell grand slam combined with the Wolves (10-9, 1-2 ASUN) winning the plate battle 14-9, helped UWG push past in-state rival GSU (15-6, 3-0 SBC).

In addition to Presnell's homer, Luke Johnson cracked a home run, while the Panthers tallied four. Nine different UWG pitchers threw tonight, including Brendan Parks, whose excellent mound time earned him a save. Ian Moore secured his first-ever win for West Georgia.

After the game, head coach Jeff Smith briefly talked about today's performance, stating, "Our guys didn't quit. We gave up seven in the first two innings, and we could have laid down, but they didn't. This team doesn't quit. This team is going to compete. A lot of the wounds were self-inflicted tonight. Walks, hit by pitch, errors. These are some things we need to clean up. The bottom line is we hung in there tonight. Georgia State is an extremely good team. We didn't play well, but were able to come away with a win."

GAME SUMMARY
Making his fifth start on the mound for UWG was right-handed junior Evimael Quiles. Through 9.1 innings on the mound, Quiles posted a 6.52 ERA with seven strikeouts prior to facing the Panthers. GSU started redshirt freshman Jake Hembree. Through 7.1 innings across five appearances, Hembree held a 4.91 ERA with 10 strikeouts before today.

The explosive GSU offense opened the out-of-conference contest jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the first thanks to a pair of home runs and a passed ball that allowed a Panther to score.

Coming out to the mound for UWG in the second inning was right-handed sophomore Garrett Moody. In Qulies' one inning, the pitcher allowed three earned runs and struck out a pair of Panthers. In this frame, GSU pushed their lead to 7-0 on a three-run homer over the center field fence.

The third inning marked the ending of Moody's day as he was replaced by freshman righty Maverick Torres. In Moody's lone frame, the pitcher allowed three runs and tallied one punch out.

The UWG pitching carousel continued in the fourth with Torres being replaced by right-handed junior Gavin Mask. In Torres' one frame, the freshman recorded one strikeout and did not give up a hit. During the bottom of the fourth, West Georgia dashed the visitors' advantage to 7-4 thanks to a Tyler Presnell grand slam. This marks Presnell's second homer of the week.

In the fifth, Mask rotated out for right-handed senior Camden Diamond after he struck out one batter and prevented any hits in his lone inning. Mask's mound time was highlighted by the Wolves' second successful pick off of the day, with the first coming courtesy of Moody in the third. GSU finished the top of the fifth with an 8-4 lead after hitting a solo home run. Still in the frame, Luke Johnson responded by crushing the Wolves' second homer of the day, cutting the Panthers' advantage to 8-6.

Junior righty Mason Phillips took over the mound duties for Diamond in the sixth. Diamond allowed one run after GSU scored on an RBI double. In the bottom of the frame, UWG stormed back with RBIs by Landon Weidner, Cooper Prince and Brady McDevitt to tie the game at 9-9. Following this, a passed ball allowed a UWG base runner to score, giving the Wolves a 10-9 advantage.

In Phillips' one frame on the mound, he allowed one run and struck out one batter. He was relieved by junior righty Ian Moore in the seventh. GSU tied the game up at 10-10 in the seventh after a wild pitch got lost in the dirt, allowing a Panther to take home. It did not take long for the Wolves to respond. In the bottom of the inning, a throwing error followed by a poor GSU decision to attempt a second base pickoff with a man on third, allowed UWG to take a 12-10 lead.

Moore was relieved by right-handed senior Will Dean in the eighth after striking out two batters and giving up an unearned run.

Dean would be replaced by right-handed senior Brendan Parks in the ninth with UWG up 12-10 and one Panther on base. Two walks and a sacrifice RBI fly brought Georgia State within one, putting the go-ahead run on base, but Parks' back-to-back strikeouts extinguished Georgia State's hopes while sealing UWG a 12-11 victory.

In Dean's his 1.1 innings on the mound, the pitcher allowed one run and struck out two batters. In the ninth, Parks struck out two batters and did not give up a run.
