Lane Pearson Pitches Complete Game in Shutout Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - UWG baseball delivered a 2-0 shutout to the Florida Gulf Coast Eagles tonight at Swanson Stadium, highlighted by Lane Pearson's historic nine-inning complete game.

Superb pitching by Pearson and a two-run shot by Carter Dierdorf helped the Wolves (11-9, 2-2 ASUN) secure a game one win against the Eagles (8-14, 1-3 ASUN).

In Pearson's first UWG complete game, he struck out nine batters and gave up just two hits. This victory marks the program's first-ever shutout ASUN win and the first time a UWG pitcher threw a complete nine-inning game at the Division I level.

Following the win, head coach Jeff Smith talked about what he saw today, stating, "The bottom line is that our guys competed. I'm proud of the guys for that. We limited our mistakes. Only one hit by pitch and one error. That's the reason we were able to put ourselves in the position to get the shutout. Lane (Lane Pearson) threw extremely well. He is one of the best pitchers in the league, and he showed that again tonight."

GAME SUMMARY

Making his sixth start of the season for the Wolves was right-handed senior Lane Pearson. Coming into today, Pearson posted an ASUN-best 1.55 ERA and 38 strikeouts. For the Eagles, FGCU started sophomore righty Chris Diaz, who posted a 6.59 ERA with 19 strikeouts prior to today. Diaz joined the Eagles this year after transferring from the University of Miami.

As expected with two stellar pitchers on the mound, both teams struggled to get anything going at the plate. Through the first three frames, UWG tallied one hit to the hosts' zero.

All was quiet offensively, until junior first baseman Carter Dierdorf drove a pair of Wolves home on a choppy base hit through the right side during the fourth.

For the first time this season, Pearson pitched past seven frames. Tonight, the Virginia native was dominating any Eagle that stepped into the box and showed no signs of slowing down.

In the eighth and ninth, Pearson added two more strikeouts, on the way to securing his fourth win of the season, 2-0 over FGCU.

Through nine scoreless frames, the pitcher struck out nine of the 30 batters he faced and only conceded two hits. The ASUN strikeout leader's total now sits at 47 on the season.
