West Georgia Baseball Claims First-Ever ASUN Series Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. - West Georgia baseball made history today, securing the program's first-ever ASUN series win thanks to a 5-2 game two victory over the FGCU Eagles in Florida. First pitch for the series finale is slated for 1 p.m. tomorrow.

Error-free baseball, solid pitching by Sam Cole and Brendan Parks, and an excellent day at the plate by Carter Dierdorf pushed the Wolves (12-9, 3-2 ASUN) past the Eagles (8-15, 1-4 ASUN) at Swanson Stadium.

The pair of pitchers allowed just two runs while striking out eight Eagles total, with Parks leading the way with five punch outs. In Dierdorf's five at-bats, the first baseman tallied three hits, which was made up of a home run and a double. This ninth homer of the season puts Dierdorf in first in the ASUN.

Head coach Jeff Smith said after the game, "I thought our pitching was good and I thought we saw the ball well. Carter Dierdorf was 3-for-5 with two RBIs. Cooper Prince was 1-for-3 with an RBI. We out-hit them, out-scored them and our pitchers out-pitched them."

Talking about how today's win secured the Wolves their first ASUN series victory, coach Smith said, "We take one game at a time, that's what we preach. I'm excited for the guys to get the series win, but we are looking forward to playing tomorrow. We competed today and I'm proud of them for that."

GAME SUMMARY

Junior righty Sam Cole made his sixth start on the mound for the Wolves. Coming into today, Cole posted a 3.07 ERA with 20 strikeouts. For the Eagles, FGCU started right-handed junior Ashton Pocal. Prior to today, Pocal posted a 6.00 ERA with 17 strikeouts in 12 innings through six appearances.

Similarly to game one, both teams' pitching and error-free fielding prevented either squad from getting on the board early.

The game stayed scoreless until FGCU went up 1-0 in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI single to left.

It did not take long for the Wolves to respond. In the fifth, Noah Darden crushed a triple deep into right field to start the frame. Following this, catcher Hank Smith drove a pinch runner home on a ground out RBI to second, knotting the game up at 1-1.

Blake Bradford highlighted the bottom of the fifth by making the Wolves' fourth double play of the season. The third baseman got a force out and then threw the FGCU batter turned base runner out at first.

In the following frame, second baseman Patrick McCullough pushed the Wolves to a 2-1 lead on an RBI single that brought the speedy Cooper Prince home from second base.

The bottom of the sixth marked the ending of Sam Cole's day on the mound as he was replaced by senior righty Brendan Parks. Through five frames, Cole stuck out three Eagles and allowed one earned run. Still in the sixth, the Eagles answered with a one-run RBI double to tie the game back up.

Continuing the UWG scoring trend that was seen the past two frames, West Georgia regained a 4-2 advantage in the seventh thanks to an RBI single by Cooper Prince that was followed by a RBI double courtesy of Carter Dierdorf.

Putting the nail in the FGCU coffin, Dierdorf crushed his ninth home run of the season to extend the Wolves lead to 5-2.

UWG held on to win 5-2, securing their first ASUN series win.

Through four frames, Parks struck out five batters and allowed one earned run.
