UWG Baseball Secures First ASUN Series Sweep

FORT MYERS, Fla. -  UWG baseball beat the FGCU Eagles 7-2 today in Florida, claiming the program's first ASUN series sweep.

Behind solid pitching and a dominant 15-4 hitting display against FGCU (8-16, 1-4 ASUN), West Georgia (13-9, 4-2 ASUN) secured their fourth straight victory, highlighted by Patrick McCullough's perfect 5-for-5 day at the plate. In addition to his five hits, McCullough tallied
three runs, two RBIs and two doubles.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "It's the same thing as yesterday. We got a quality start, we jumped on them early and Seth Dudley was able to keep them off balance. Our guys on the mound are locating and commanding pitches. That's huge for us. It all starts on the mound. We were also happy to have McCoullough (Patrick McCoullough) back today. He had an excellent day, he did a great job."

While wrapping up, coach Smith said, "I'm happy for the team. I was pleased with the effort all weekend. We are excited to win three down here and help ourselves out in the conference standings. We will be back at it tomorrow getting ready for this Tuesday's game in Athens."

GAME SUMMARY

Starting on the mound for UWG was senior righty Sam Cole. Prior to today, Cole posted a 4.72 ERA with 30 strikeouts through 26.2 innings across five games. For the Eagles, FGCU started left-handed junior Chase Kriebel. In 19.1 innings through five appearances, Kriebel posted a 5.59 ERA with 14 strikeouts prior to today.

Unlike the opening two games, it did not take long for the Wolves to get going offensively. In the first frame, Patrick McCullough put UWG up 2-0 on an RBI double. Following this, two Wolves would join McCullough on base, but the Eagles did just enough to escape the top of the first in a two-run deficit.

Similarly to the first frame, UWG loaded the bases with two outs in the second, but FGCU was able to secure the third out before the Wolves could capitalize.

West Georgia's 2-0 lead was cut to one in the fourth inning by an FGCU home run.

In the following frame, UWG answered by pushing their lead to 4-1 thanks to a Jack Witmer sacrifice fly and a FGCU error that allowed Brady McDevitt to score.

West Georgia held this 4-1 advantage until Jacob Bowman hit a sacrifice fly in the seventh, extending the Wolves' lead to 5-1. The bottom of the frame marked the ending of Cole's day on the mound. In six innings, Cole struck out three batters and gave up just one earned run. He was relieved by junior righty Bryan Gomez. The Eagles scored one run this inning on an RBI double to center, cutting the UWG lead to 5-2.

During the eighth, Gomez rotated out for right-handed graduate student Dosie Drakeford. In Gomez' 1.1 innings, he struck out one Eagle and allowed a lone run.

With one more chance to tack on a few more scores before leaving Florida, UWG capitalized. In the top of the ninth, a FGCU pitching error allowed McCullough to take home from third. Following this, Mason Cooper capped the UWG scoring off with an RBI base hit.

West Georgia went on to win 7-2.

In Drakeford's 1.2 frames on the mound, he did not give up a hit.

BY THE NUMBERS
Through the three-game series, UWG out-hit the hosts 27-14.

Despite only playing in two games, Patrick McCullough tied for a team-high six hits alongside Carter Dierdorf
