UWG Baseball Drops Midweek Matchup to #3 Georgia

ATHENS, Ga. -  West Georgia baseball fell to the #3 Georgia Bulldogs 13-6 tonight at Foley Field.

In the out-of-conference contest, UWG (13-10, 4-2 ASUN) battled with the top-ranked Bulldogs (25-2, 5-1 SEC), but ultimately fell short as the Wolves could not overcome an early 9-0 deficit.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith stated, "We went down nine early, but fought back and scored six runs to get into the game. If you take away that third inning and those late runs in the seventh and eighth, we are right there in it. We gave away too many freebies today, and they were able to barrel up on some balls and score. I think Camden Diamond was great on the mound today, and I think the guys competed in every phase. Overall, today was a good learning experience for us."

GAME SUMMARY

Starting on the mound for UWG was right-handed junior Evimael Quiles. In 10.2 innings through five appearances, Qulies posted a 8.44 ERA with nine strikeouts coming into today. For the Bulldogs, UGA started right-handed redshirt senior Tyler McLoughlin. Through 11.1 innings across seven games, the 2-0 pitcher posted a 1.59 ERA with 15 punch outs prior to today.

In the first frame, it looked like the Wolves were going to escape the inning tied at 0-0 after getting two outs, but a three-run homer by the nation's best home run hitting team put the Bulldogs up. This marked the Bulldogs' 71st home run of the season, 12 more than the next team (Tennessee).

During the second, UGA extended their advantage to 4-0 on an RBI base hit.

As with many of the midweek games this year, UWG began the pitching rotations early in order to get more Wolves time on the mound. In the third, Qulies rotated out for right-handed senior Will Dean. Qulies allowed three earned runs and struck out one Bulldog in two frames. Still in the third, UGA extended their lead to 9-0 on a pair of RBIs and a two-run homer. Following the fifth score, Dean rotated out for junior lefty Camden Diamond.

During the fourth, West Georgia's bats came alive. Kicking things off, Mason Cooper drove a hard hit ball into center field for an RBI base hit. Following this, Jacob Bowman crushed a Bulldog pitch to left field, resulting in a UWG run. Landon Weidner finished off the West Georgia scoring explosion by driving a pair of Wolves home with a double deep into left field, cutting the UGA lead to 9-4.

During the next frame, the Wolves dashed the Georgia advantage to 9-6 after Carter Dierdorf was able to take home on a wild pitch, followed by Mason Cooper's second RBI base hit of the day. In the fourth and fifth, UWG went from being hit-less to tallying six.

Coming out to the mound for the Wolves in the sixth was redshirt sophomore Davis Williams. In Diamond's 2.1 frames, the pitcher did not give up a hit.

Williams pitched for one frame and was rotated out for junior Bryan Gomez in the seventh. Williams stuck out one batter and did not give up a hit tonight. UGA extended their lead to 11-6 in this inning on a two-run homer. Following the Bulldog's home run, Gomez was relieved by junior righty Gavin Mask. Gomez finished with one punch out while allowing two earned runs.

In the bottom of the eighth, UGA pushed their advantage to 13-6 on a two-run homer. In this frame, Mask rotated out for junior Mason Phillips. Mask struck out one Bulldog and allowed two runs through one inning. Phillips struck out one batter and did not give up a hit in eighth.

The #3 Bulldogs went on to win 13-6.
