UWG Dealt 8-6 Home Defeat

CARROLLTON, Ga. - The West Georgia baseball team opened their third ASUN series, dropping game one 8-6 to Stetson University tonight at Cole Field.

UWG (13-11, 4-3 ASUN) went toe-to-toe with the defending ASUN Champions, the SU Hatters (15-12, 5-2 ASUN), but three early scores off of a pair of West Georgia errors ultimately proved to be the difference maker in tonight's defeat.

Following the game, head coach Jeff Smith said, "Our guys competed. I thought our pitchers did very well tonight. What got us was our two errors that gave Stetson three runs. Also, the two walks in the eighth inning that turned into an earned run, that's four runs right there that we gave to them. We just need to come out tomorrow and play cleaner baseball."

GAME SUMMARY

Senior righty Lane Pearson made his sixth start of the season today. Coming into the game, Pearson posted an ASUN-best 1.18 ERA with 47 strikeouts through 38 innings. For the Hatters, Stetson pitched right-handed sophomore James Hays. Prior to today, Hays recorded a 8.31 ERA with five strikeouts in 4.1 frames against UConn, his lone appearance.

The Hatters opened the conference contest going up 2-0 in the top of the first with a triple to right center. UWG immediately responded with three scores thanks to a two-run triple by Patrick McCullough and a ground out RBI by Landon Weidner.

Stetson quickly answered, taking a 5-3 lead in the second inning after a UWG error allowed an SU run to score, followed by a two-run homer.

West Georgia erased the Hatters' lead in the fourth inning, knotting the score at five after Brady McDevitt's base hit drove in two runners home.

In the sixth frame, Stetson reestablished a tight 6-5 lead with an RBI single. This score ended Pearson's day on the mound, as he would be relieved by senior lefty Brendan Parks. Through 5.2 innings, Pearson tallied five strikeouts and allowed three earned runs.

For the second time today, the Wolves fought back to tie the game up, this time courtesy of Carter Dierdorf reaching home on an error in the seventh.

During the eighth, Stetson broke the tie with a sacrifice fly. Following this run, Parks rotated out for graduate student Dosie Drakeford. Parks struck out three batters and allowed two earned runs through 1.2 frames. Heading into the bottom of the eighth, UWG trailed 8-6.

Drakeford closed out the game for the Wolves, not giving up a run in 1.2 innings.

UWG fell 8-6.

BY THE NUMBERS
McDevitt and McCullough led the Wolves with two hits each.

Parks was tagged with his second loss, bringing his season record to 2-2.
