Seventh-Inning Grand Slam Downs Wolves at Kennesaw State

KENNESAW, Ga. - It was a Wednesday heartbreaker for the UWG Softball team as they fell to the Kennesaw State Owls 10-7 in non-conference action.

West Georgia (8-13) led 5-0 after two, 7-3 after five, and then Kennesaw State (9-17) struck for two runs in the sixth and five in the seventh, the final four on a walk-off grand slam to hand the Wolves a loss in the final game before ASUN conference play starts.

The bats were hot for UWG as the Wolves had eight hits and three home runs to score seven runs on the night. UWG opened the scoring in the second with a Megan Waites single that cashed in a leadoff single from Makayla Register. Following another single, this one by Addison Sturdivant, Blaire Bizette provided a three-run big fly, making it 3-0, Wolves. The very next batter followed suit, albeit against a new KSU pitcher, as Shelby Garrett made it back-to-back homers and a 5-0 UWG lead.

Calli Hardison, who blanked KSU for three innings, only allowing a walk, ran into trouble in the fourth as she gave up a leadoff home run followed by a single and another home run before exiting the game with a 5-3 lead.

In the fifth, Makayla Register made it a 7-3 lead as she homered after Madison Vandergriff earned her way on the hard way. The bottom half saw the Owls load the bases before UWG turned a double play and then got a ground out to escape the jam.

A walk and a costly error pushed across two KSU runs in the sixth, and then it was a leadoff single followed by three consecutive walks that pushed the Owls' deficit to 7-6 in the seventh. The heartbreaking blow was a walkout grand slam to put KSU up and end the game.

Bizette and Register each had two hits in the game with Bizette recording three RBIs and Register knocking in two.

NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Bizette's home run was the fourth of her senior campaign and the 18th of her career. Her 2-for-3 performance raised her batting average to .424 which is fourth best in the ASUN.
- For Garrett, she slugged her second home run of the season. It was the first time the Wolves had back-to-back home runs this season and first since Bizette and Rylee Green went back-to-back against Fort Valley State on April 16 of last season.
- Register's home run was the third of her sophomore season and the 10th of her career.
- Dixiana Sims had a hit in the loss, extending her hitting streak to seven games.
