CARROLLTON, Ga. – The UWG softball team fell 11-4 on Wednesday night, dropping a non-conference game to the Mercer Bears at home.
West Georgia (9-16) fell behind early and never recovered against a veteran Mercer (16-14) team that completed the season sweep over the Wolves.
Mercer tagged UWG starter Dixiana Sims for four runs in the first, and to their credit the Wolves came right back in their half and cut the deficit in half.
Megan Waites led off first with a single and got to third in a double by Blaire Bizette. Jacelyn Lahr picked up an RBI on a groundout and Ally Long drove in the second run with a double to right center.
The Bears added one more in the second and then four in the third before another RBI base hit from Long made it a 9-3 Mercer lead.
Mercer added on in the fourth, scoring one more and then their 11th run came in the seventh.
Lahr once again drove in Waites in the bottom of the seventh to account for the final margin.
UWG had nine hits in the loss with Waites, Bizette, and Long each picking up two hits.
Kaprice Leonard pitched in relief of Sims, throwing 4.2 innings and giving up two runs.
The Wolves return to ASUN action this weekend, going on the road to take on North Florida in a three-game set that begins on Saturday.
