DECATUR, Ga. - The UWG softball team got back in the win column on Friday morning, opening the weekend at the Bob Hope Memorial with a 5-3 win over Colgate.
West Georgia (7-9) never trailed in the game, getting a pair of runs in the top of the first and never looking back to knock off Colgate (5-9) and snap a four-game skid.
In the first, Addison Sturdivant got on with a one-out walk and moved to second on a Blaire Bizette single. Later in the inning, Makayla Register doubled home two runs to give UWG the early lead.
Megan Waites drove in a run in the second, scoring Dixiana Sims who led off with a bunt single. In the circle, Calli Hardison started and blanked the Raiders for the first two innings before running into trouble by surrendering solo shots in the third and fourth innings.
Sims came on in relief, allowing one run in 3.2 innings with four strikeouts to earn the win. Hardison's final line was 3.1 innings with two runs and four punch outs.
The Wolves got two big insurance runs in the fifth as Register once again got a hit to drive in Bizette and Sturdivant to make it a 5-2 lead. The Raiders would add their final run in the bottom of the fifth, but Sims would hold off any comeback chance.
UWG had seven hits with Register, Bizette, and Sims each recording two.
NOTABLE NUMBERS
- Register passed Bizette for the team lead with her four-RBI performance. It was the second four-RBI game of the season by a UWG player and the third time Register has had at least four RBIs in a game in her career.
- The win in the circle was the third of the season for Sims who is now tied for the team lead in that category and also leads in strikeouts with 26 in 36.1 innings pitched.
