DECATUR, Ga. - The West Georgia softball team defeated the Georgia State Panthers, 4-1 on Friday night at the Bob Hope Memorial, to add another notch in the win column.
West Georgia (8-9) and Georgia State (6-16) fought closely, before UWG ignited a rally in the fifth inning that led to four runs and a Wolves' victory.
Jenna Samuel and Kate Kastelic would battle it out in the circle for the first three innings, preventing either team from gaining the upper hand and combining for three hits in three innings.
Georgia State would strike first in the bottom of the fourth, with a solo shot that would give the Panthers a 1-0 lead heading into the fifth inning.
After
Dixiana Sims was walked to begin the top of the fifth,
Zekylah Boyd'a sac bunt attempt turned into a GSU error which would put Sims in scoring position at second base.
Megan Waites would step up to the plate, singling to right field, bringing Sims in and tying the score at 1-1. Boyd and Waites move into scoring position at second and third base when
Blaire Bizette stepped up to plate and drew a walk. After that, Samuel drove in Boyd with a sacrifice fly, giving West Georgia a 2-1 lead.
Ally Long would add two more runs for the Wolves, continuing their dominant inning.
The Georgia State Panthers would attempt a late-game comeback in the seventh inning, but Samuel's pitching and the defense behind her would hold firm to win 4-1 and improve their win total to eight.
Waites led UWG with two hits for the day, and the team had six hits overall.
West Georgia will be back in action tomorrow with a rematch against Colgate slated for 1 p.m.first pitch.
