UWG Athletics Embarks on 2026 Conference Realignment as Part of ASUN-WAC Alliance

CARROLLTON, Ga. - On Thursday, in conjunction with the Atlantic Sun Conference (ASUN) and the Western Athletic Conference (WAC), the University of West Georgia Department of Athletics announced that the University of West Georgia will become a member of the United Athletic Conference (UAC) in 2026-27, a rebranded WAC that is embarking on a groundbreaking alliance with the ASUN.

"We join others in and out of our current conference schools in celebrating the creativity of Commissioner Bacon and others in this endeavor," stated Director of Athletics Jason Carmichael. "Today's announcement is the culmination of incalculable time and energy, much of it driven by and expended through the conference leadership."

"Conference membership in today's modern intercollegiate athletics context is fluid and in constant need of stewardship. Actions taken by the ASUN and UAC member institutions clearly demonstrate a willingness to engage in this vital endeavor," added Carmichael.

Beginning in the 2026-27 athletic year, the UAC will feature eight host institutions, including UWG, Abilene Christian University, Austin Peay State University, the University of Central Arkansas, Eastern Kentucky University, the University of North Alabama, Tarleton State University and the University of Texas at Arlington.

The ASUN will maintain a conference of seven members, including Bellarmine University, Florida Gulf Coast University, Jacksonville University, Lipscomb University, the University of North Florida, Queens University of Charlotte and Stetson University.

"We are grateful for the clarity of today's announcement and look forward to engaging more in the days to come," Carmichael said. "Go Wolves!"
