West Georgia Volleyball Falls to Furman and Georgia State in Season Opener

ATLANTA, Ga. -The University of West Georgia women's volleyball team kicked off the season today at the GSU Invitational dropping matches to Furman University and Georgia State. The team returns to Atlanta tomorrow to play Presbyterian College at 11 a.m.

Led by Molly Brunell's 12 points, the Wolves (0-2) challenged the Furman Paladins (1-0) in the season-opener, but ultimately fell 3-0. Following the first match loss, UWG took on the host GSU Panthers (2-0) and was defeated 3-0 despite a valiant effort.

MATCH ONE
Match one against the Paladins opened with both teams trading blows until the visitors from South Carolina were able to establish an 11-6 advantage by capitalizing off of five early UWG errors. With FU keeping an arms-length lead, the Wolves were able to cut the deficit to 17-14 after going on a four-point run. Sadly, Furman did just enough to stay off the comeback, holding on to win set one 25-20.

Similarly to set one, the second started with both squads trading leads through the first ten points. That was until a Paladins' five-point scoring flurry increased their lead to 15-9. UWG continued to fight, but FU held on to win 25-16.

Set three opened with the Paladins securing a 7-2 advantage as the Wolves could not get anything going offensively. After falling behind 21-10, it looked like the Wolves were way out of it. That was until a UWG scoring charge dashed the FU lead to 23-20. Despite the valiant effort, Furman held on to win 25-21, securing the 3-0 match win in the 2025 season opener.

One thing that stats do not show, was the power behind the Wolves' kills. When Brunell had an open chance in match one, there was little the Paladins could do to send the rocketed volleyball back to its returner. This led to the Arizona native leading both teams with 11 kills, resulting in a UWG-high 12 points.

MATCH TWO
Following a couple of freebie points given away by the Wolves, UWG began settling into the loud GSU home environment in match two. By the time the Panthers reached ten points, the Wolves were right on their tail with eight scores of their own. Out of a West Georgia timeout, GSU responded to the Wolves' tenacity by going on an 8-1 run, extending their lead to 18-9. This deficit was just too big to overcome for UWG, leading to the Panthers taking the opening set 25-15.

UWG opened the following set with a 3-0 advantage, a first for today. Using great team communication and scoring charge led by Brunell and Alex Strating, UWG had the Panthers locked up at ten apiece. Over the next few volleys, the hosts capitalized a handful of Wolves' errors, allowing GSU to establish a 20-14 advantage. Before UWG could battle back, GSU secured a 25-16 win.

For the second set in a row, the Wolves opened up with a 3-0 advantage. Thanks to three straight scores by Grace-Blythe Cornett and a strong kill by Valiree Schmus, UWG held a 7-6 lead over GSU. Trading one-point leads back and forth, the hosts were able to grab a 16-12 advantage. The Panthers held this tight lead the rest of the way to secure a 25-19 set three win.

For the second straight match, Brunell led both teams in kills (9) and led UWG in points (9).
