Wolves Stumble in Road Match

ATLANTA, Ga. - UWG volleyball dropped the final match of the GSU Invitational, 3-1, to Presbyterian College this afternoon (Aug. 30).

Battling to the very end, West Georgia (0-3) went toe-to-toe with PC (1-2), but would go on to fall 3-1 after winning the second set.

MATCH DETAILS
In the opening set of the weekend's finale, the Wolves and PC traded blows for the first 16 points each squad scored. By the time the Blue Hose led 18-16, the match had been tied five times and the lead changed once. Unfortunately, a handful of costly attack errors and a late 3-0 PC scoring run resulted in the Blue Hose taking set one, 25-18.

In the following set, UWG started off jumping out to a 10-4 lead by capitalizing on five straight PC attack errors, three of which were blocked by Wolves at the net. Led by a scoring attack by Sanai Young and excellent team defense, the Pack stayed out in front of the visitors from South Carolina. Despite PC cutting the deficit down to 19-16, the Wolves' resilience and killer focus was too much to overcome for the Blue Hose, leading to UWG taking their first set of the season, 25-20. One key factor in this win was the Wolves' ability to block the PC attacks before they had a chance to do any damage. At this point, UWG out-blocked PC 7-4.

In set three, PC opened it up taking a 10-2 advantage. In this set, it was all Blue Hose with the Wolves not being able to find an answer. UWG fell 25-12.

Following the three-minute break between the third and fourth sets, the Wolves woke back up. In the race to ten points, the score was tied five times and the lead changed twice, with PC reaching that ten-point mark first. With the game neck-and-neck, back-to-back service aces by Valiree Schmus paired with kills courtesy of Young and Rylee Henderson put UWG ahead 14-11. PC quickly overcame this difference, taking a tight 17-16 lead. Following a handful of errors by UWG, the Blue Hose's lead ballooned to 22-19. Out of a West Georgia timeout, the Wolves scored three straight to lock the game at 22-22, forcing PC to call a break in the action. Following their timeout, Presbyterian scored three quick points, securing a 25-22 win and a 3-1 match victory.

Schmus and Young's 12.5 points led UWG, with the latter leading the Pack with 11 kills. Young also finished with the highest hitting percentage on the floor, posting a .370. Henderson posted a West Georgia-best five blocks. UWG finished out-blocking PC 9-8.
