Game Recap: Women's Volleyball | | Danny Talbert

West Georgia Falls on Day One of Asheville Trip

ASHEVILLE, NC - UWG women's volleyball fell 3-0 to UNC Asheville and Furman today at the Bulldog Invitational in Asheville, North Carolina. The team stays in Carolina to close out the Invitational with a Saturday match against East Carolina. First serve is set for 11 a.m. with live streaming and stat links tagged on the UWG volleyball schedule.

Despite the Wolves (0-4) showing great fight, West Georgia's -.010 hitting percentage in match one proved to be the difference maker in UNCA (1-3) grabbing their first victory of the season.

In the rematch against Paladins (3-2), UWG battled against a solid Furman team, but ultimately could not get enough going late to secure the win. Valiree Schmus led UWG in scoring with a career-high 14 points off of a career-high 12 kills.

MATCH ONE DETAILS
The first match of the Bulldog Invitational opened with the host institution, UNCA, jumping out to a 15-8 advantage over the Wolves. The Bulldogs secured this lead by capitalizing off of West Georgia's seven early errors, while limiting their mistakes to one. UWG battled back late, but the score differential was just too much to overcome, resulting in a 25-14 defeat.

With the Wolves carrying the late momentum from the first set into the second, UWG and UNCA stayed neck-and-neck on their race to the ten-point mark. For the first time today, West Georgia took a 13-12 advantage, with Molly Brunell leading the charge with two second set points. Trading blows on the way to 25, the Bulldogs did just enough to secure a 25-21 victory.

Similarly to the second set, both squads looked evenly matched in the final, with the game being tied four times on their way to a dozen points. Securing back-to-back scores by Valiree Schmus and a kill courtesy of Brunell, UWG grabbed a 14-13 advantage over the Bulldogs. Falling behind 23-21, it looked like UNCA was going to run away with it, but the Wolves continued to fight. Following a kill by Sanai Young and a pair of UNCA errors, West Georgia tied the set at 24-24. The Bulldogs answered the short UWG-run by scoring two straight points, resulting in a 26-24 victory.

Schmus led the Pack with 7.5 points in this match, followed by Rylee Henderson's 6.5 points and Brunells' five. Addy Franz led the Wolves with a career-high 15 digs.

MATCH TWO DETAILS
After falling behind 9-3 in set one against Furman, UWG clawed their way back to being down 13-9 with Schmus leading the way. By the time the Wolves hit the 13-point mark, the scoring quickly stalled for the Pack. Furman would go on a 7-1 run, ballooning their advantage to 24-14. UWG went on to fall 25-16.

Off of two kills and a service ace, the Paladins opened the second set by jumping to a 3-0 lead. After the slow start for UWG, it did not take long for the Wolves to come alive. Tallying points off a Rylee Henderson kill, a Addy Franz service ace and back-to-back kills by Schmus, UWG was closing in on the Paladins, trailing 10-9. Continuing to stay locked in, Schmus crushed another kill assisted by Desha Van Veldhuizen and followed it up with a service ace, bringing the score to 14-12. Out of the media timeout, FU grabbed their biggest lead of the set, 19-14, forcing UWG to call for another break in the action. Following the timeout, the Wolves went on a 3-1 run, fueled with kills by Henderson and Schmus and a block from Alex Strating and Schmus. Down 20-17, Furman was able to hold off the UWG rally to grab a 25-20 win.

Starting with a kill by Young, West Georgia opened the third set on a 4-1 run, their biggest lead against Furman. Staying out in front with a tight advantage, the Wolves were the first to reach double digits. Over the next few volleys, the teams traded scores until the match was locked up at 17-17. Securing points from multiple Wolves, UWG kept the set close, but FU powered through late to secure a 25-22 win.

For the second straight match, Schmus led the team, tallying a career-high 14 points.
