West Georgia Volleyball Secures First Win of 2025

Wilmington, NC - The UWG volleyball team grabbed a 3-2 match victory over UNC Greensboro to close out the UNCW Hampton Inn University Invitational with its first win of the 2025 campaign.

Following a first set loss to UNCG (5-4), UWG (1-9) battled back to take three of the next four sets, securing the Wolves a road win in North Carolina.

"I'm really happy for our players,' said head coach Kara Hellmannn. "They have been working, grinding and growing everyday. Getting this win in five sets feels very rewarding. We have been battling for this breakthrough moment and we are very proud of this group's grit and courage to keep showing up everyday."

Valiree Schmus led the Pack with a career-high 17.5 points and 14 kills. Following Schumus with a career-high 16.5 points with 12 kills was Alex Strating and Rylee Henderson with a career-high 13.5 points and 13 kills. Sanai Young tallied a season-high eight blocks and Marley Staats finished with a season-high six blocks. Addy Franz totaled a career-high 32 assists and Desha Van Veldhuizen recorded a season-high 20 assists.

MATCH DETAILS
Today's opening set against UNC Greensboro was one of the fiercest battles of the season so far. By the time the match was locked up at 25-25, it marked the 18th time the set had been knotted. Pushing the pace for UWG this set was Strating with four points. West Georgia was the first to reach 25, but the Spartans tied it and then took a 26-25 lead off of back-to-back kills. The Wolves tied it one last time off of a UNCG service error, however, two quick kills gave UNC Greensboro a 28-26 win. This marked the first time this year that UWG played past 25 points.

Despite being down a set, the Wolves continued to battle, a characteristic that this team has shown all season long. With Strating, Henderson and Schmus leading the way for the Wolves, UWG secured a 13-10 advantage and showed no signs of slowing down. West Georgia held an arms-length lead the rest of the way, but UNC Greensboro stayed right behind. Tallying the 25th point from Henderson's seventh kill of the match, UWG grabbed its first set win since the Alabama A&M match (Sept. 9), 25-22.

West Georgia started the third set jumping out to a 5-2 advantage with Young securing a pair of early points for the Wolves. After falling behind, UNCG was able to recover and take a lead by capitalizing off a handful of West Georgia service errors. The rest of the way was marked by UWG staying within a six-point deficit, but the Wolves were unable to overtake. UNCG took set three 25-20.

During the fourth set, West Georgia opened it up by jumping out to a 15-9 advantage, its largest lead of the tournament. UWG seized this advantage by minimizing its mistakes on attacks and receptions. Continuing to play one of the cleanest sets of the season, UWG grabbed a 25-19 win. As a team, the Pack recorded a .394 attack percentage and .333 hitting percentage, the highest figures the Wolves have posted in a set this season.

Marking the first time UWG forced a fifth set this year, the Wolves kicked off the match finale securing a 5-1 lead. Garnering points off of Wolves' errors, UNCG closed the gap to 6-5, but a quick 5-0 run, gave West Georgia five-point cushion and forced a Spartans timeout. UNCG clawed its way back to being down 12-11, but the Wolves were not going home without a win. A bad UNCG set and back-to-back kills by Schmus secured UWG its first match win of the season with a 15-12 fifth set win.
