Wolves Fall on the Road to Mercer

MACON, Ga. - UWG volleyball fell 3-0 to Mercer tonight in the opening round of the Mercer Invitational, as the Bears were able to hold off multiple late comebacks staged by the Wolves.

Even Grace-Blythe Cornett leading UWG (1-10) with a season-high 15 points, Mercer's (2-9) ability to make plays late in the match, allowed the hosts to take their second win of the season.

In addition to Cornett's season-high points, the outside hitter also tallied a season-high five digs.

MATCH DETAILS
Following a slow start for the Wolves in which UWG fell behind 7-0, the Pack slowly began to wake up from their 100-mile trip to Macon. Led by Cornett and Valiree Schmus with two points each, UWG dashed the deficit to 11-9. With Cornett continuing to push the pace, West Georgia stayed right on the Bears' tails, trailing 19-17. Unfortunately, Mercer finished with a 6-3 run to secure a 25-20 set one win.

Another slow start for the Wolves set Mercer up with an early 10-4 advantage. With the hosts' lead ballooning to 15-8, it looked like UWG was out of it, but the Wolves continued to fight. Tallying points from Cornett, Alex Strating and Sanai Young, West Georgia cut the Mercer advantage to 17-15, marking the biggest UWG scoring-run of the night. Similarly to set one, the Pack stayed within striking distance, but a strong Bears' finish overpowered UWG. Mercer grabbed a 25-21 set two win.

Unlike the opening two sets, the finale kicked off with both teams trading blows. By the time the match reached the 10-point mark, the game had been tied six times. Fueled by a mix of UWG errors and Mercer kills, the Bears created a 16-10 lead over West Georgia. Responding with a whole host of Wolves tallying points, UWG dashed the Bears' advantage to just 20-19. For the remainder of the match, it felt like each time West Georgia scored, Mercer responded in kind, allowing the hosts to stay in front. Securing back-to-back points by Rylee Henderson, the Wolves tied the match at 23-23, but Mercer was able to close the door on West Georgia's comeback by grabbing points off an error and a Bears' kill. Mercer took set three, 25-23.
