Wolves Soar Past the Skyhawks in Road Win

MACON, Ga. - UWG volleyball secured its first sweep of the season, 3-0, over UT Martin at the Mercer Invitational this afternoon.

With the Wolves (2-10) recording a season-high .263 hitting percentage, the UT Martin Skyhawks (1-9) stood little chance at keeping pace with UWG playing one of their cleanest matches of the year.

Led by Valiree Schmus with 13.5 points, Grace-Blythe Cornett tallied 13 and Alex Strating recorded 10 points for the Wolves. Addy Franz tallied a career-high 36 assists and Olivia Kremer totaled a career-high 18 digs

"Our young wolves continue to grow," said head coach Kara Hellmann about today's win. "We love the resilience of this group and how they show up ready to work and get better every day."

MATCH DETAILS
Looking locked in from the very first serve, West Georgia needed no time to get warmed up. Led by Rylee Henderson and Schmus in the opening set with three points each, the Wolves played some of its best volleyball so far this season. Building a five-point advantage with the match at 10-5, UWG continued to create separation by not conceding points off errors while also tallying scores from strong attacks. Going on to secure a 25-17 opening set win, the Wolves also recorded a .467 hitting percentage, its highest of the season.

Following a slow UWG start in which UT Martin created a 6-2 lead, the Wolves were forced to call an early timeout before the Skyhawks' advantage ballooned any bigger. Out of the break, the hungry Wolves were back within striking distance before UTM could adjust. Tallying points by various members of the Pack, UWG retook a 13-12 advantage, forcing the Skyhawks to call a timeout in the hope that they could slow the bleeding. Capitalizing on UTM mistakes, the Wolves went on a 5-1 run out of the break, and did not look back. UWG held on to take set two, 25-19.

Today's finale marked one of the most competitive sets of the season. By the time UWG held a tight 24-23 lead, the set had been tied 16 times and the lead changed seven. Each time a team tallied a score, the other answered quickly. With UT Martin locking the match up for the 17th time, it looked like the set could go either way, but the Wolves quickly put a damper on the Skyhawks comeback before it could get started. Tallying points on a kill by Sanai Young and Henderson, UWG grabbed a 26-24 set three win, and a 3-0 match victory.

"I loved our fight throughout that match. Being down in the second set early and finding our footing to regain control was a good growth moment for us. And then to battle point for point late in the third to seal the sweep shows how our young group is growing not only physically in matches but also mentally and emotionally," stated Hellmann.
