Non-Conference Play Ends with Wolves Falling to North Dakota

MACON, Ga. - Despite West Georgia volleyball taking the opening set over North Dakota, the Fighting Hawks won the next three to grab a 3-1 victory over the Wolves on the final day of the Mercer Invitational.

UWG (2-11) closed out non-conference play and its 13-game road stretch, falling to ND (3-8), wrapping up the Macon trip with one win on the weekend.

Rylee Henderson and Valiree Schmus led the Wolves with 11 points each, and Sanai Young posted a team-high nine kills for ten points. Alex Strating finished with a season-high six blocks and Grace-Blythe Cornett recorded a season-high 10 digs

MATCH DETAILS

In a back-and-forth battle to the double-digit mark, West Georgia and the Fighting Hawks traded leads to open set one. Breaking the trend,  Cornett crushed back-to-back kills and Schmus placed a pair of service aces to give the Wolves a little bit of breathing room, forcing ND to call a timeout down 16-11. Led by Henderson with six first-set points, the Pack held on to win 25-20 despite ND stringing together a late 6-1 run.

The Fighting Hawks opened the following set jumping out to an early 9-3 advantage by capitalizing off UWG errors, forcing the Wolves to call a timeout. Schmus and Young pushed the pace for the Pack, but the Fighting Hawks continued to fly away with the set, winning 25-14.

Much like the previous set, ND secured a 6-1 lead to start the third. Despite being down five, the Wolves quickly regrouped and began chipping away at the Fighting Hawks' lead. By the time ND reached 13 points, UWG was just behind with 11. Holding a tight two-point advantage, North Dakota continued to answer each Wolves' point with a score of their own. That was until multiple Fighting Hawks attack errors locked the game at 22-22. The Wolves tallied one more point of a Cornett kill, but ND came out on top, 25-23, after tallying scores from a UWG error and a pair of kills.

Jumping out to an early lead for the first time since the opening set, the Wolves kicked off the finale with a 6-2 advantage, thanks in part to Strating placing back-to-back service aces. Storming back, the Fighting Hawks tied the Wolves at 10 apiece. The squads traded leads over the next few volleys, but a handful of kills combined with ND service aces created distance for the team from up north. The Wolves continued to fight, but North Dakota proved to be too much, going on to win 25-18.
