CARROLLTON, Ga.- The University of West Georgia Wolves closed out non-conference play on Sunday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over High Point at University Soccer Field. The win marked UWG's second in their last three matches and gave the program the most non-conference wins in the Division I era, while also avenging last season's 4-0 defeat to the Panthers.
The match opened with pressure from both sides. In just the second minute, Katherine Hagans fired the Wolves' (2-7) first attempt, sending her shot just wide of the post. High Point (0-6-2) quickly countered, forcing a save from goalkeeper Emily Sanabria on a strike by Sabba Haghgoo in the fourth minute. The Panthers continued to press throughout the first half, generating nine shots before the break and finishing with 16 overall. Peyton Gilmore led the effort with three shots, while Haghgoo, Ally Ruiz, Courtney Andruczk, and Morgan Wilcox each put efforts on goal that were all stopped by Sanabria.
Freshman forward Kaylen Brown delivered the only goal of the match in the 49th minute, scoring on UWG's first shot on goal. The goal was Brown's second in as many matches, moving her into a tie with Noemi Casique for the team lead in scoring this season.
Sanabria anchored the Wolves' defense, finishing with six saves to secure her second shutout of her collegiate career. Across the pitch, High Point goalkeeper Aubrey McKessy had a solid outing of her own, recording two saves and conceding the lone goal despite facing nine shot attempts.
West Georgia's offense improved in the second half, with Casique and Campbell Taylor each taking shots on goal. The Wolves appeared to have doubled their lead in the 82nd minute, but the goal was negated by an offsides call. Despite a late push from High Point, Sanabria and the Wolves' back line stood firm to preserve the shutout.
Statistically, UWG finished with nine shots, three on target, and six corner kicks, while High Point totaled 16 shots, six on goal, and five corners.
The victory carried extra meaning since it was Senior Day for the Wolves, where UWG honored their graduating student-athletes before kickoff.
Following the match, head coach Mallory Sayre praised her team's resilience, saying, "We responded well after a tough loss on Thursday night. We battled to defeat High Point, who we lost to 4-0 last year. We couldn't imagine any better way to close out non-conference play."
With the non-conference slate complete, West Georgia (2-7) now shifts their focus to ASUN competition, opening on the road at North Florida.
