ASUN Opener Sees West Georgia Fall to North Florida

JACKSONVILLE, Fla.- UWG women's soccer opened ASUN Conference play on Thursday night at Hodges Stadium, falling 3-0 on the road to North Florida. The Wolves move to 2-8-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference play, while the Ospreys improve to 3-5-2 and 1-0-0 in the ASUN.

North Florida wasted no time getting on the scoreboard, striking just three minutes and 38 seconds into the match when Isabella Pontieri found the back of the net to give the Ospreys an early 1-0 advantage. Less than six minutes later, UNF doubled their lead as Allie Fekany scored off assists from Pontieri and Chloe Lynch in the ninth minute.

The Wolves defense settled in after the quick start, anchored by goalkeeper Emily Sanabria, who recorded five first half saves to keep the score at 2-0 heading into the break. Despite the Ospreys controlling much of the possession, Sanabria kept UWG in striking distance making key stops, including a pair of saves against Pontieri and Taylor Tamares midway through the half.

UWG found their offensive rhythm after halftime, generating all four of their shots in the second half. Campbell Taylor produced the Wolves' first attempt in the 48th minute, forcing a save from UNF goalkeeper Chrissa Avery. Moments later, Kaylen Brown fired from distance, narrowly missing the net. Taylor tested Avery again with another on target later in the half, but the Ospreys' keeper turned away both opportunities to preserve the shutout.

North Florida extended their lead again in the 52nd minute when Fekany scored again, finishing another assist from Pontieri to make the score 3-0. The Wolves continued to battle, using 18 different players throughout the contest, but were unable to break through.

By the final whistle, UNF had outshot UWG 25-4, including 13 shots on goal compared to the Wolves' four attempts and two shots on goal. Sanabria finished with ten saves in the net, marking her second double digit save performance of the year. Taylor led the Wolves offensively with two shots, both on target, while Brown added two additional shot attempts.

UWG will remain in Jacksonville for their next ASUN matchup, taking on the Jacksonville Dolphins on Sunday, September 21 at 1 p.m.
