Buccaneers Strike Twice to Top West Georgia in Carrollton

CARROLLTON, Ga. The West Georgia Wolves returned home on Thursday evening, falling 2-0 to East Tennessee State at University Soccer Field.

The Buccaneers (3-2-2) nearly scored in the 5th minute, but an offsides call erased an early goal. UWG goalkeeper Emily Sanabria responded with an acrobatic save in the 13th minute to keep the match scoreless. Despite the early stops, ETSU broke through in the 19th minute when Reagan Fitzgerald converted off an assist from Ruby Teixeira to give the visitors a 1-0 lead.

The Wolves (0-6-0) responded with three first-half shots, led by a shot on goal from Kaylen Brown, but ETSU dictated the game with 12 shots before halftime. Sanabria's efforts in net kept UWG within reach, as she posted five saves in the opening half and finished the match with nine total stops.

Senior defender Karlie Brooks earned her first career start for the Wolves, while Honora Kahwach made an immediate impact off the bench in the 38th minute with a perfectly timed slide tackle to stop an ETSU attack. The duo anchored the back line that forced the Buccaneers to work hard to produce offensive opportunities.

In the second half, ETSU doubled their advantage in the 59th minute when Teixeira found the back of the net to make it 2-0. The Wolves continued to battle, generating four second-half shots, but Buccaneer goalkeeper Addison Yelton collected a save to preserve the shutout.

By the final whistle, ETSU held a 21-7 edge in shots and a 7-1 advantage in corner kicks. Brown led UWG offensively with two shots, while Breanna DeWinter and Isa Ramirez added second-half opportunities.

With two home contests now behind them, the Wolves look ahead to the rest of their four-game homestand, determined to secure their first victory of the season in front of the home crowd.
