CARROLLTON, Ga. – The West Georgia Wolves delivered their most complete performance of the season on Sunday, defeating Alabama State 2-0 at University Soccer Field. The win marked UWG's first since September 29, 2024, at Jacksonville, and their first victory of the 2025 campaign.
West Georgia dominated, setting new season highs in shots (22), shots on goal (9), and corner kicks (5). The Wolves held 59 percent of possession and more than doubled Alabama State's total attempts (22-9), dictating tempo and applying pressure throughout the match.
The first goal came in the 18th minute of play, when freshman Rachel Higgins found space inside the box and buried a right-footed shot for her first collegiate goal. UWG stayed aggressive and were rewarded again in the 42nd minute after a foul in the penalty area. Junior Katherine Hagans converted a penalty kick to give the Wolves a 2-0 advantage, their first halftime lead of the season.
Defensively, UWG stood firm behind goalkeeper Emily Sanabria, who made four saves to earn the Wolves' first shutout of 2025. The back line limited Alabama State to just four shots on goal, closing off passing lanes and frustrating the Hornets' forwards in the second half.
Alabama State (0-6-1) put together nine total shots, led by Emmanuella Yapi, who tallied three attempts, with one on goal. Jordan Williams, Zeta Chevalier, and Queenster Mensah also tested the Wolves' defense with shots on goal. Despite the pressure, Hornets goalkeeper Corrine Brookes kept Alabama State within striking distance, finishing with seven saves.
Sunday's win also showcased an improved offense from UWG. Entering the match, the Wolves averaged just 0.33 goals per game, while conceding 3.1 goals per game, and averaging only 1.8 shots on goal per match. Against Alabama State, those numbers skyrocketed as UWG scored twice, allowed none, and generated nine shots on goal.
Head Coach Mallory Sayre praised the team's improvement: "We were able to create opportunities last game, but today we executed on those chances and look forward to carrying that momentum into Thursday's match."
The Wolves (1-6-0) now turn their attention to their upcoming matchup on Thursday, September 11 vs Alabama A&M, looking to build on an excellent showcase.
