UWG Softball Preview: The 2026 Outfielders

1/26/2026 11:00:00 AM

CARROLLTON, Ga. - As we get closer and closer to the start of the 2026 UWG softball season, we continue to break down the Wolves' roster ahead of their February 6 opener.

Today, we break down the outfield which features two returners who have become mainstays in the UWG lineup in their career.

Starting in left field, Megan Waites has become one of the better defensive outfielders of the past decade while also presenting a major threat of the top of the Wolves' lineup day in and day out. Through two seasons, Waites has made 100 starts and is a career .297 hitter. She has 17 doubles and five home runs to her credit, and is a natural base stealer, accumulating 32 steals over her freshman and sophomore seasons combined.

For the third straight season, she will be accompanied by centerfielder Zekylah Boyd. The senior, Boyd, is an elite defender, who repeatedly steals hits away with her speed and range, and also has an above-average arm, recording 18 career outfield assists. In her career, which features 138 starts, she has had 241 total chances and made just four errors.

At the plate, Boyd has batted .251 for her career and scored 68 runs and stole 31 bases.

Head coach Kristy Burton has more of a question mark in right field, as she has four players who could potentially see time in right.

Only one of those, Jadyn Tummins, is a returner, although she missed all of her sophomore season with an injury in 2025.

Two of those in the mix, Madison Humber and Bekah Johnson are transfers while the third newcomer, Ella Oswalt is a true freshman. Humber batted .222 while making 29 starts for Georgia Southern as a true freshman. Johnson played two seasons at Troy, seeing action in 49 combined games in 2024 and 2025. Oswalt is a former All-State player at Northgate in Newnan where she hit well over .400 as a senior.

The Wolves are set to open their 2026 season on February 6 as part of the West Georgia Classic. UWG will host four teams for a weekend tournament that features 13 total softball games in three days on UWG's campus. Friday's schedule for that weekend features UWG opening with Bellarmine and Austin Peay.
