Knights Outlast the Wolves in Kentucky

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The West Georgia men's basketball team suffered a 77-74 loss to Bellarmine University tonight in Knights Hall.

Fueled by 46 points in the paint and a 50 percent field goal percentage, Bellarmine (8-13, 3-6 ASUN) created a big enough advantage to outlast UWG (10-11, 4-5 ASUN) on their home court.

"We didn't make enough winning plays. You know, and credit to Bellarmine. They played really well. They were efficient offensively, as they always are," said head coach Dave Moore. "We tried to go zone a little bit, tried to keep them out of rhythm, tried to slow them down. But at the end of the day, we couldn't keep them out of the paint."

The Wolves were led today by Shelton Williams-Dryden with 25 points and seven rebounds on 63 percent (12-19) shooting. The Knights were led by Tyler Doyle with 21 points on 64 percent shooting.

Off six first-half turnovers by UWG and BU outrebounding the Pack 17-10, the Knights controlled the opening period.

With both teams kicking off the game attacking from the paint, Bellarmine jumped out to an 8-6 lead by the first media timeout following a pair of early UWG turnovers.

Even with the Pack committing five fouls and four turnovers early, BU extended its lead to only 14-11 by the under-12-minute media timeout after the Knights missed their three opening shots from deep.

Going cold from the field for over two minutes, UWG looked to the bench to create offensive production down 19-11. With Malcolm Noel recording four points off inside looks and Matija Žužić  draining a three, UWG cut the hosts' advantage to 23-18 by the following media timeout.

Receiving four consecutive points from Williams-Dryden, West Georgia brought Bellarmine's advantage down to 25-23 with four minutes remaining in the half.

Following another costly cold spell by UWG, the Knights' lead ballooned to 34-25.

With the Wolves down nine with under a minute to play in the half, the Pack began to claw back. Kicking things off with another four points from Williams-Dryden, Brady Hardewig joined in on the fun by knocking down his first three of the game to cut the hosts' advantage to 36-31 at the break. Williams-Dryden's 11 first half points led the way for UWG.

Staying hot through the halftime break, Hardewig kicked off the second period draining back-to-back three-pointers to dash the BU advantage to 39-37.

Bellarmine quickly recovered by capitalizing on second-chance points from offensive rebounds to jump out to a 49-39 lead with less than 15 minutes left in the game. Remarkably, BU outrebounded the Pack 21-12 and had a 7-1 offensive rebound advantage up until this point.

Following a successful goaltending challenge by head coach Dave Moore, Smith hit his third three-pointer of the game, and Williams-Dryden got a contested floater to fall, cutting the BU advantage to five.

Coming out of the Wolves' offensive run, Bellarmine knocked down three shots from beyond the arc to jump back out in front 60-51 with under 10 minutes left.

With both teams trading scores at a 50 percent field goal clip, BU stayed in front by double digits. Bellarmine led 71-60 by the final media timeout.

Staying perfect from deep, Žužić hit his third three of the game and JaVar Daniel recorded four consecutive points to bring the Bellarmine lead down to 71-67.

Unfortunately for the Pack, BU secured the 77-74 win after hitting their free throws.

The Wolves return home to host Austin Peay this Saturday at 4:30 p.m. in The Coliseum.

"They're (APSU) big, strong, and physical. A lot to get ready for with those guys. They've got two of the better forwards in our conference," stated Moore about the upcoming matchup. "Tate McCubbin was the rookie of the year last year. They got talent, they got size, they play well together. So we're gonna have our hands full. But it's a game we can match up with, we gotta figure out how to limit them offensively. For us to win games in this league, we gotta be able to defend and rebound."
