Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | Danny Talbert

Top-Ranked Governors Best UWG

CARROLLTON, Ga. - Marking the second consecutive Saturday that West Georgia men's basketball hosted the top ASUN team at home, UWG fell 81-78 to the red-hot Austin Peay Governors today in The Coliseum.

The Wolves (10-12, 4-6 ASUN) put up a valiant effort against the top-ranked Governors (15-6, 9-1 ASUN), but ultimately fell in part due to the visitors hitting 34 of its 41 (83 percent) free throws, while the Pack went 17-of-25 (68 percent) from the line.

"They (APSU) got guys that are really good players, veteran guys, good young players. So, we had our hands full tonight, but, really proud of our guys," said head coach Dave Moore in the post-game press conference. "We fought back, down nine at halftime. There is just so little margin for error, you know. And at the end of the day, there's a lot of things to clean up. We made a lot of mistakes, but we fought and gave ourselves a chance, and we got to capitalize at the foul line. We got to capitalize at the foul line."

The Wolves were led by Shelton Williams-Dryden with 20 points and 11 rebounds on 50 percent (7-14) shooting. This marked his ninth double-double of the season. APSU was led by Collin Parker with 30 points and 12 rebounds on 46 percent (6-13) shooting.

Fueled by 20 points in the paint and the Governors' shooting at a 50 percent field goal clip, APSU created an arm's length lead in the first period.

It was not just Austin Peay attacking from down low to start the game. Tallying a combined 12 points in the paint, today's ASUN action was locked at 8-8 at the first media timeout.

After going 0-for-4 from deep to start, APSU hit three of their next four shots from beyond the arc to jump out to a 25-13 advantage by the time the clock reached the ten-minute mark.

Driven by Williams-Dryden and Kenneth Chime tallying two-pointers and Matija Žužić draining his first three of the day, UWG clawed back to a 27-21 deficit by the under-eight media timeout.

Even with the Pack continuing to create open looks on offense, a costly two-minute cold spell allowed APSU to extend its lead to 40-27 with less than four minutes left in the period.

Heading into the break, West Georgia trailed 44-35 with Williams-Dryden's seven points pushing the pace for the Pack.

Opening the second half with a three-pointer from JaVar Daniel at the top of the arc, Josh Smith followed it up with an acrobatic layup to cut the Governors' lead to 44-40 one minute into the period.

Being sent to the line seven times early in the period, APSU jumped back out 55-45 advantage by the 15-minute mark.

Forcing Austin Peay to take contested shots, UWG began chipping away at the visitors' lead by hitting easy layups on the other side of the floor. At the 12-minute media timeout, the Wolves trailed 55-51.

Continuing to get solid production from the bench, UWG stayed on the Governors' heels. With under four minutes remaining, the Wolves trailed 69-63.

Even with Kolten Griffin cutting the APSU advantage to 79-76 on a three-point play, UWG ran out of time before being able to stage a full comeback. Austin Peay won 81-78.

The Wolves continue their three-game homestead taking on North Florida next Thursday (Feb. 5) at 7 p.m.
