Wolves Outlast UNA Lions in Florence

FLORENCE, Ala. -  West Georgia men's basketball held on to beat North Alabama 82-73 tonight on the road, marking the Wolves' second consecutive victory.

After creating a double-digit lead that was fueled by seven opening-half made shots from beyond the arc, a costly late cold spell for UWG (12-13, 6-7 ASUN) allowed the Lions (7-17, 2-11 ASUN) to claw their way back, but the Wolves continued to battle.

With guard Josh Smith draining a career-high 28 points, highlighted by a handful of clutch late threes, combined with forward Shelton Williams-Dryden adding 21, UWG proved to be too much for the Lions.

"It was a really good team win on the road. A team effort, lots of points off the bench. We were 40-9 off the bench. That's really the story of the game, And our ability to make shots, shot 50 percent of the field, 10-20 on the road from threes is a huge key to victory," said head coach Dave Moore

Smith finished the night shooting 69 percent (9-13) from the field, knocked down a career-high five threes and grabbed four rebounds. Williams-Dryden recorded his 12th double-double of the year, finishing with a team-high 10 boards to go along with his 21 points.

"He (Smith) played a clean game. 28 points on 13 shots, it was really, really efficient," said coach Moore about Smith's performance. "Josh's contributions are critical to our team. We have to have him. We have to have his scoring. And I thought he did a decent job defensively. You know, some of these guys aren't easy to stay in front. He helped to stay in front of some of these guys."

Coming off an 87-73 home win over Jacksonville (Feb. 7), the Wolves and Lions opened the game trading three-pointers, with guard Malcolm Noel hitting back-to-back shots from beyond the arc to give UWG the early edge.

West Georgia continued to hold a tight 21-19 lead by the under 12 minute media timeout, with Noel's eight points leading the way followed by Williams-Dryden's six. Remarkably, 14 of the Lions' points came from in the paint.

Over the next few possessions, Williams-Dryden and Smith traded scores to put the Wolves up 33-29 with six minutes to go in the half.

Redshirt-sophomore guard Brady Hardewig joined his fellow Wolves with the attack from deep, draining the sixth made three of the night to extend the Pack's lead to seven.

UWG ended the period up 46-40 with Smith's 16 points leading the way.

Following an early scoring drought to open the second half by both teams, the Wolves began attacking from the inside to tally easy baskets and push its advantage to 51-40 at the first media timeout.

With North Alabama hitting just three of its opening 13 shots of the second half (23 percent), UWG continued to hold an 11-point lead at the following media break.

West Georgia would then fall into a cold spell of their own, allowing the Lions to cut the lead down to 59-55 with under ten minutes to play.

Quickly recovering, UWG jumped back out to an 11-point lead in part thanks to Smith hitting his fourth and fifth three-pointers on back-to-back possessions. West Georgia held a 71-60 lead at the final media break.

Out of the timeout, UNA answered with a pair of three-pointers to dash the UWG lead to 74-66, but began showed signs of slowing down.

Tallying points from Williams-Dryden and Smith, West Georgia would run away with an 82-73 win.

The Wolves stay on the road to rematch the Central Arkansas Bears this Saturday (Feb. 14). In the latest matchup (Jan. 22), UWG was defeated 86-65 at home.

"They're (UCA) one of the best teams in the league. I think right now sitting second all by themselves in second place in the league. So we know it's going to be a difficult game. We've got to go play well and give ourselves a chance to win by guarding them and making it difficult on them to score," stated Moore about the upcoming matchup.
